Book excerpt: It's the 1920s-the First World War is over, and the people of New Bedford, Massachusetts, like the rest of the country, enjoy high spirits and great prosperity. Familiar faces, young and old, look to a promising future in this great industrial city with a glorified maritime past. But trouble looms, and the next decades will require strength and determination. A troubled textile industry, the Great Depression, a challenged school system, hurricanes, wartime and a post-war economic decline-how will the city survive the tides of change? Resilient residents will take strength and encouragement from friends and community, finding laughter and escape through music, theater, radio, sports and other forms of entertainment. Everyday heroes will emerge. The city will reinvent itself and forge on. Fast forward to the 1960s. Following another post-war boom, new industries come to town, the hurricane barrier goes up and the fishing fleet brings promise and growth. But urban renewal tears at the heart of downtown and wipes out many old neighborhoods. The Vietnam War and the city's race riots bring turmoil and upheaval. Still, a new generation again brings hope and change. In A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two: 1925-1980, the second installment of a three-volume set, hundreds of photographs and stories bring the city to life in an enthralling journey through the core of the 20th century. Ride the last trolley, sip an ice cream float at a bygone soda fountain, take a turn on the ballroom dance floor. Celebrate New Bedford's music-from the big band sounds to folk, fado, jazz and rock and roll. Explore the evolution of the city's diverse mix of cultures and see New Bedford's fishing industry grow from a small fledgling fleet of draggers to what today is the country's number one fishing port. Experience the people, places, and events that have shaped New Bedford, one of New England's most historically significant cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Bedford, Vol. 2 In January, 1917, Mr. Tripp presented on behalf of the board of trustees of the Free Public Library of the city of New Bedford the sixty-fifth annual report of the board to the city council. This report Mr. Tripp submitted as clerk of the board of trustees, but the leading feature of this was the report of George H. Tripp, librarian, to the trustees of the library. This report of the growth, activities and needs of the library shows that his position is not a sinecure, but one of responsibility that is receiving the closest attention, and the report breathes a spirit of loyalty and devotion as well as a masterful grasp upon the duties of the position he so ably fills. At the opening of the new library building, December 11, 1910, Mr. Tripp delivered a most thoughtful and valuable address. He descends from the ancient Tripp family founded in Rhode Island by John Tripp, and in the town of Dartmouth by his son, Joseph Tripp. Lemuel Tripp, grandfather of George H. Tripp, was a merchant, shipowner and sea captain, and in 1831 an incorporator of the Fairhaven Bank, which in 1864 became the Fairhaven National Bank. Hiram Tripp, son of Lemuel Tripp, was a cooper by trade, a shipowner and an important man in his day. He married Louisa Gifford, daughter of Bethuel and Susan (Clark) Gifford, she also a descendant of ancient and honorable family. Hiram and Louisa (Gifford) Tripp were the parents of George H. Tripp, who as educator and principal in New Bedford public school and as librarian of the Free Public Library has been in the public service for the greater part of his mature years. George Henry Tripp was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, 1853. After public school and preparatory courses of study, he entered Dartmouth College, whence he was graduated, class of 1876. He chose pedagogy as his profession, and after five years teaching in various high schools was elected, in 1881, principal of the Middle Street Grammar School, New Bedford. This Middle street school house was built in 1844-45, the first brick school house in the city, the upper floor being occupied by the high school. That building, costing $10,000, was outgrown, but in new, enlarged and improved form is now an important item of the city's system of buildings devoted to free public education. Between 1845, when the school was founded, and 1881, when Mr. Tripp was elected, the school had been under the care of eleven principals, Benjamin Evans, the first principal, being recalled as its fourth. Mr. Tripp continued as principal twenty years, 1881-1901. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of New England Volume 2 written by Isaac Backus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A historian who has been an actor in the events which he narrates, has peculiar advantages and disadvantages. He can write with more minuteness of detail, and with a fresher and more life-like coloring. He can write with more confidence, and, drawing from his own experience and observation, is in this respect more trustworthy. On the other hand, he is more liable to be warped by prejudice, to see only the excellences and none of the defects of those with whom he has been identified, and only the defects and none of the excellences of those to whom he has been opposed, to be a partizan rather than a judge, and to make his narration little more than the reflection of his personal opinions or his personal sympathy and affection, hostility and spite. "The Church History of Isaac Backus has all the above-named excellences. To a large extent he was an eye-witness of that which he describes; and where not an eye-witness, he placed himself in closest possible connection with it by personal acquaintance with the actors, and by immediate and most diligent and thorough examination of records and other evidence. While it may be too much to say that he absolutely avoided the defects above named, yet his sound judgment, his natural candor and honesty and his elevated Christian principle, have made him as nearly free from them as perhaps any author who has written in similar circumstances." --from the Editor's Preface

Allen, through diaries, letters, and newspaper accounts of the period, follows the Quakers from Plymouth Colony to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where these "children of the light" lived and founded an enormously lucrative whaling industry and elevated it to an almost holy activity ordained by God for the enrichment of the "chosen." Allen recounts the full story of a famous 1871 Arctic disaster, in which thirty-two vessels in the New Bedford whaling fleet, carrying 1200 officers and crew, found themselves trapped in gale-driven pack ice. The shipwrecked victims were miraculously rescued without a single loss of human life. The damage to the fleet, however, was something from which New Bedford never fully recovered.
