Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Natural Philosophy From the Earliest Periods to the Present Time "in primis, hominis est propria veri inquisitio atque investigate. Before an other things, man is distinguished by his pursuit and investigation of truth. And hence, when free from needful business and cares, we delight to see, to hear, and to communicate, and consider a knowledge of many admirable and abstruse things necessary to the good conduct and happiness of our lives: whence it is clear that whatsoever is true, simple, and direct, the same is most congenial to our nature as men. Closely allied with this earnest longing to see and know the truth, is a kind of dignified and princely sentiment which forbids a mind, naturally well constituted, to submit its faculties to any but those who announce it in precept or in doctrine, or to yield obedience to any orders but such as are at once just, lawful, and founded on utility. From this source spring greatness of mind and contempt of worldly advantages and troubles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... only to take that number which forms the tenth in the series. It is also evident, that these numhers of the terms are also the indices of the powers of the common multiplier, which enter into each term respectively. This is the leading idea which may be supposed suggested by a passage in Archimedes. Thus, if our computations always involved no other numbers than such as are terms in a geometrical progression, we should only have to add the indices, and thus be led directly to the product; or, conversely, to subtract them, and find the term which is the quotient. Again, by doubling, tripling, &c. the indices, we should find their products indicating a term which would be respectively the square, cube, &c.of the original term; and, conversely, we should have the square, cube, &c. roots. Thus far all was sufficiently clear and simple. But here arose the main difficulty: this would apply only to a very few limited systems of numbers, and could not be of any general practical utility. The grand discovery of Napier, therefore, amounted to this: --that a geometrical progression may be found in which All the natural numbers are terms. Of the methods by which he arrived at this conclusion, or of the general principle on which such a series can be assigned, we cannot here say much; but we may sufficiently illustrate it by an example. Download or read book Presocratics written by James Warren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest phase of philosophy in Europe saw the beginnings of cosmology and rational theology, metaphysics, epistemology, and ethical and political theory. It saw the development of a wide range of radical and challenging ideas: from Thales' claim that magnets have souls and Parmenides' account that there is only one unchanging existent to the development of an atomist theory of the physical world. This general account of the Presocratics introduces the major Greek philosophical thinkers from the sixth to the middle of the fifth century BC. It explores how we might go about reconstructing their views and understanding the motivation and context for their work as well as highlighting the ongoing philosophical interest of their often surprising claims. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the major Presocratic thinkers, including Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles, Leucippus and Democritus, and an introductory chapter sets the scene by describing their intellectual world and the tradition through which their philosophy has been transmitted and interpreted. With a useful chronology and guide to further reading, the book is an ideal introduction for the student and general reader.

Book Isaac Newton and Natural Philosophy

Download or read book Isaac Newton and Natural Philosophy written by Niccolò Guicciardini and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Newton is one of the greatest scientists in history, yet the spectrum of his interests was much broader than that of most contemporary scientists. In fact, Newton would have defined himself not as a scientist, but as a natural philosopher. He was deeply involved in alchemical, religious, and biblical studies, and in the later part of his life he played a prominent role in British politics, economics, and the promotion of scientific research. Newton’s pivotal work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which sets out his laws of universal gravitation and motion, is regarded as one of the most important works in the history of science. Niccolò Guicciardini’s enlightening biography offers an accessible introduction both to Newton’s celebrated research in mathematics, optics, mechanics, and astronomy and to how Newton viewed these scientific fields in relation to his quest for the deepest secrets of the universe, matter theory and religion. Guicciardini sets Newton the natural philosopher in the troubled context of the religious and political debates ongoing during Newton’s life, a life spanning the English Civil Wars, the Restoration, the Glorious Revolution, and the Hanoverian succession. Incorporating the latest Newtonian scholarship, this fast-paced biography broadens our perception of both this iconic figure and the great scientific revolution of the early modern period.
