Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Music and Art in Illinois, Including Portraits and Biographies of the Cultured Men and Women Who Have Been Liberal Patrons of the Higher Arts The progress of art in a community mav be considered, to a certain ex tent, the gauge of its prosperity, for its growth is absolutely dependent upon wealth and culture. Some one has said that the golden age of painting lies in the Christian centuries, yet the history of painting is linked with that of the pyramids. The history of art is one of the most fascinating ever written. The changes in ideals with the years, the many varied conceptions of colors and their uses, the different standards which have prevailed, are indisputable testimony as to the times and peoples they represent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Music and Art in Illinois, Including Portraits and Biographies of the Cultured Men and Women Who Have Been Liberal Patrons of the Higher Arts The State of Illinois has been selected as one whose history shall be thus told, and the result of the effort has been the bringing together of names illustrious and honorable, and the providing of a look into lives cultured, broad and uplifting. Into Illinois, in the beginning, came the very cream of the sturdiness and intelligence of the New England and Middle States, with the spirit of the Revolution still dominant. Then came also the culture and genial hospitality of the South, and all combined to develop the best in their adopted State. The result was one of the wonders of the century just closed, and Illinois stands to-day second to no State in the Union from any standpoint. Business interests have developed and flourished, manufactures are large and important, educational advantages are the best, while such strides have been made in music and art as to justify the prediction that Chicago will yet become the music and art center of this country. The years have wrought great advances in the existence of a general education in art and music and of more cultivated literary tastes. There are writers and speakers who seem to delight to revel in a sort of pessimistic rant over the degeneracy of the times and to sigh for the days gone by. Whatever has made the "rift in the lute" for them, it is a fact that the people as a whole are far more cultured than a half century ago. Then the distinction between the business and the professional man was wide, and, unless to fit her for some particular vocation, it was hardly thought necessary to inflict a thorough educational training upon the daughter of the family. To-day the demand for educated business men has been felt and met. The magazines have lent their influence to this end in presenting papers on every variety of topic - music, art, politics, religion, fiction and every sort of subject calculated to amuse or instruct the reader. The women in our homes have become earnest students, accomplished linguists, musicians and artists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nostalgia and Glee in Sycamore Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nostalgia and Glee in Sycamore Illinois Classic Reprint written by C. R. McLagan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nostalgia and Glee in Sycamore, Illinois Memories are such a sweet sadness. They bring laughter through tears. We live again our childhood and youth as we dwell with memory. As we all don our crowns of gray and move toward the inevitable eternity, it is an almost universal wish that we could be suddenly transported by a miracle of science, back to the days of sandlot baseball and the ol' swimmin' hole. Most everyone wishes, too, that he or she could live life over only better and no one would want to miss the fun we had in our younger days. Please pardon us for entering so much of our own person al memoirs We took the liberty of doing so because, to our great surprise and greater disappointment, we found the humor of history the most difficult of all to find and, making the dis appointment much worse was the fact that we had very foolishly thought it would be the easiest. We have made no attempt to give you all of Sycamore's history and humor, nor all of its available human interest sto ries. To have done so would have demanded a volume of huge proportions. It would have been so costly that you would not have accepted it. One word or two of warning. The first section dealing briefly with a chronological history of the Sycamore area has some fascinating information now and then, but practically no humor. The next section, dealing with our churches, is treated with devout respect, but you will find some quiet humor in it, too. There are bits of humor to be found scattered all through the book after you pass the chronology. We have tried very hard to give you an interesting book, but because this was our first attempt at a project of this kind, we have fears. As we write this preface, near the end of the job, we are not at all satisfied with our book. We hope and pray you will not be disappointed, but we offer our apologies and say we are sorry just in case. It has been a lot of work. We walked many miles. We worked at our desk every day that our health would permit, alsomany nights, holidays and Sundays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Brief Biographies of the Figurines on Display in the Illinois State Historical Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Brief Biographies of the Figurines on Display in the Illinois State Historical Library Classic Reprint written by Georgia L. Osborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Biographies of the Figurines on Display in the Illinois State Historical Library The eldest of seventeen children, a young life full of poverty and hardship, but with an intense desire for knowledge, is the story of Mrs. Schmidt's early days in Germany. She mastered the English language, and bent every energy toward self-improvement along progressive lines. At the age of twenty, she came to America. It was not long before she was married, and she was often over taxed with her home duties and her studies. Mrs. Schmidt opened a small studio and began to teach danc ing, physical training and play-acting. She also designed costumes for the players. Not yet satisfied, she studied the costumes of women from the beginning of time. She made small wax figures and dressed them, commencing with Eve and ending with the modern swimming girl. The small studio grew into the Schmidt College of Scientific Costuming, in which Mrs. Schmidt's husband and two sons worked with her. Since the presentation of the figurines, one son, Helmut, who modeled them, has died. Mrs. Schmidt has built up this institution with hard work, infinite patience, and the ambition to be cor rect in every detail of a costume. She conducts a course of lectures on this subject in the University of Chicago, which has proved very popular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Pioneers and Pioneer Events of the State of Illinois: Including Personal Recollections of the Writer; Of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Peter Cartwright, Together With a Brief Autobiography of the Writer I urged upon my uncle the privilege and duty even that rested with and upon him, to put his newspaper and fugi tive writings into final form for book publication, so that they could pass into the permanent literature of the State and not perish. It was easily seen that the terse and oft times quaint statements of facts and events had a peculiar attractiveness of expression of their own, and the honesty and candor that permeate every line of his writings doubly assure a recognition of value. • Author : Marina Belozerskaya

Download or read book Luxury Arts of the Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
