Book History of Moral Science Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Moral Science Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Robert Blakey and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Moral Science, Vol. 2 of 2 Dr. Hutcheson's treatise on the passions is a book of considerable ingenuity and importance. He seems to have set a high value upon it himself, and his affection for it may have been considerably heightened from the consideration that it was his first production, and what contributed in a material degree to bring him into notice as a moral writer. This work is divided into two parts, one on the nature and conduct of the passions, and the other contains further illustrations of the doctrine of a moral sense, and an examination of the systems of Mr. Wollaston, Dr. Clarke, and others. Book Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural and Supernatural Morals, Vol. 2 The main purpose of the book, of which this is the second of two volumes, is to establish the thesis, that there are, not one, but three sciences of morals. There appears to be, first, a science of the motives and ends of conduct that belong to pagan or non-religious man, to man regarded simply as a voluntary agent forming part of the world of nature. There appears to be, secondly, a science which, while it includes the former, takes account also of other phenomena arising from man being brought into conscious relations with God. Of the whole body of phenomena with which this science has to do, Jewish morality may be taken as the type. And there appears to be, thirdly, a science which embraces within its scope all the phenomena of the moral life of the present day, those which are at the same time Jewish together with others which are distinctively Christian. To account on natural grounds alone for the whole of the phenomena of moral life in a Christian country appears to be impossible. And it appears to be no less impossible truly to refer them all to religious influences. In order to arrive at anything like a correct understanding of moral processes in the present day, it seems necessary to discriminate carefully between those that have their origin in the constitution of man's ordinary nature, and those that are dependent upon his being brought into personal relations with God. And it seems necessary to distinguish further between the obligations of persons who know God only in some such manner as He is known by Jews, and the obligations of persons who enter into communion with Him as members of the Christian Church. In the first volume an attempt was made to exhibit a system of natural morals complete in respect of all essential points, a system generally applicable to the case of dwellers in pagan lands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Social Progress: A Philosophical Introduction to Moral Science Give us a guide, cry men to the philosopher.1 We would escape from these miseries in which we are entangled. A better state is ever present to our imaginations, and we yearn after it; but all our efforts to realize it are fruitless We are weary of perpetual failures; tell us by what rule we may attain our desire. Have a little patience, returns the moralist, and I will give you my Opinion as to the mode of securing this greatest happiness to the greatest number. There again, exclaim the objectors, you mistake our require ment. We want something else than opinions. We have had enough Of them. Every futile scheme for the general good has been based on opinion; and we have no guarantee that your plan will not add one to the list of failures. Have you discovered a means of forming an infallible judgment? If not, you are, for aught we know, as much in the dark as ourselves. True, you have Obtained a clearer view of the end to be arrived at; but concerning the route leading to it, your offer of an opinion proves that you know nothing more certain than we do. We demur to your maxim because it is not what we wanted - a guide because it dictates no sure mode of securing the desideratum because it puts no veto on a mistaken policy; because it permits all actions bad, as readily as good - provided only the actors believe them con ducive to the prescribed end. Your doctrines of 'expediency' or utility or 'general good or 'greatest happiness to the greatest num ber afford not a solitary command of a practical character. Let but rulers think, or profess to think, that their measures will benefit the community, and your philosophy stands mute in the presence of the most egregious folly, or the blackest misconduct. This will not do for us. We seek a system that can return a definite answer when we ask Is this act good?' Book Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects Vol 2 of 2 written by David Hume and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-02 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing, an Inquiry Concerning the Human Understanding; A Dissertation on the Passions; An Inquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals; And the Natural History of Religion This also must be confessed, that the most durable, as well as justest fame, has been acquired by the easy philo sophy and that abstract reasoners seem hitherto to have enjoyed only a momentary reputation, from the caprice or ignorance of their own age, but have not been able to sup port their renown with more equitable posterity. It is easy for a profound philosopher to commit a mistake in his sub tile roasonings; and one mistake is the necessary parent of another, while he pushes 'on his consequences, and is not deterred from embracing any conclusion, by its un usual appearance, or its contradiction to popular Opinion. But a philosopher, who purposes only to represent the common sense of mankind in more beautiful and more en gaging colours, if by accident he falls into error, goes no farther; but renewing his appeal to common sense, and the natural sentiments of the mind, returns into the right path, and secures himself from any dangerous illusions. The faine of Cicero ourishes at present; but that of Aristotle is utterly decayed. La Bruyere passes the seas, and still maintains his reputation; but the glory of Male branche is confined to his own nation, and to his own age. And Addison, perhaps, will be read with pleasure, when Locke shall be entirely forgotten. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Law of Love and Love as a Law

Download or read book The Law of Love and Love as a Law written by Mark Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Love and Love as a Law: Or Moral Science, Theoretical and Practical If not, it is for them to reconcile their acceptance of the precept with their acceptance of Christianity as a philosophy. What we need is a Christian philosophy. Not that philosophy is to be received on the basis of revelation. To be philosophy it must be received on the basis of reason. But if a revelation really from God teach or imply a phi losophy, it must coincide with that taught by reason, and ought to be seen thus to coincide. If Christen dom is ever to be a fair exponent of Christianity, its Moral Philosophy must be that of Christianity. We need also a philosophy in which the practical shall be drawn from the theoretical part, so that they shall not stand, as in most of our treatises, like the two sides of the Yosemite Valley, with a deep gulf between them. If, as Dr. Wayland says in the opening of his Practical Ethics, the whole Moral Law is contained in the single word Love, it would seem self - evident that the theoretical part, the philosophy, must consist of an exposition of Law and Love as they are in themselves, and as related to each other. Such an exposition Dr. Wayland did not attempt, nor can it be successfully at tempted by any one of his school, or of the school of Right, except as it shall be shown that the two precepts above given are identical.
