Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Middletown, Vermont: In Three Discourses, Delivered Before the Citizens of That Town, February 7 and 21, and March 30, 1867 Friends and fellow citizens - You have assembled this evening to hear from me the history of Middletown. I should rejoice if I could assure you that I had a full and complete his tory but I cannot so assure you. I have recently written it out, although I have for twelve years or more intended to do so, and in the meantime have been collecting the materials, as I had Opportunity. I now present it to you, not as a full and complete history, but as the best production I am able to give you. Much of the early history of the town is in oblivion. Fifty years ago, when many of those pioneer fathers and mothers were living, the most of it might have been gathered up and saved; but such as I have been able to collect in my time is hereby most respectfully and affectionately dedicated to and for the use of my native town. I wish here to say, that for the literary merits of my produc tion I claim nothing. My desire, and, I may say, only purposes have been to collect all the material facts I possibly could which go to make up your history, and to express them intelligibly and truthfully, conscious that if those facts can be preserved, they may be put in better form by some one more capable than myself, who shall come after me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Middletown Upper Houses: A History of the North Society of Middletown, Connecticut, From 1650 to 1800, With Genealogical and Biographical Chapters on Early Families and a Full Genealogy of the Ranney FamilyIn November, 1855, a young man left his college halls for the neighboring village of Cromwell where he taught a winter school. In 1860 by marriage he renewed his interest in that community. Returning in 1888 to pass the remaining years of his life in com parative quiet he gathered up here and there threads connecting those of the day with those of the formative period of this settle ment. Little by little the interest deepened and broadened until the desire was born to bring together those of other places to where their honored ancestors had lived and died. And with this came the thought to put into permanent form the story of the records kept here and elsewhere. With the reunion in 1903 the plan was broached to publish a volume and the later reunions strengthened and gave effect to this purpose. The sympathy and encourage ment from many directions have made of the toil a pleasant task. At the age of seventy-two the compiler of these pages has the satis faction of expressing appreciation of all the assistance which has been rendered by many in many ways. The Society of Middletown Upper Houses, Incorporated, has not only erected its memorials to Founders, Fathers, Pastors and Patriots, but has given its financial and moral support to the efforts of the compiler and without this aid the preliminary work could not have been brought to the point where the material was ready to go into the hands of the printer and publisher. It could hardly be possible to make a list of the individuals who have given special assistance in the gathering of material and in the spreading of the spirit of enthusiasm and not overlook some one fully worthy of mention. He has cast his net on all sides and the result is given herewith.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middletown was initially just a stop for traders about halfway along a cart road between the Appoquinimink Creek in Delaware and the Bohemia River in Maryland. A farming community rose among its rich soil in the 1600s, and settlers began to call the area home. The town was incorporated in 1861, and its limits stretched one-half mile in each direction from the crossroads at Main and Broad Streets. Middletown developed its own industry of trade and agriculture and became locally famous for crops such as peaches. The number of Middletown residents increased slowly until the town's vast stretches of farmland and proximity to four major cities began to attract residential and commercial developers in the 1980s. The population skyrocketed from 2,946 in 1981 to 18,995 in 2011, and the boundaries were extended multiple times. The community's charm and agricultural roots still remain, and thousands flock to the town annually to celebrate its heritage at the Middletown Historical Society's Olde-Tyme Peach Festival.

Download or read book Middletown Ohio written by Roger L. Miller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, Middletown has grown from a simple village of 50 people to a city of over 50,000. Located along the Great Miami River, Middletown developed from a farming community into an industrial city located on I-75, a major national highway. The Miami-Erie Canal helped speed Middletown's progress and provided a link between northern and southern Ohio. The canal allowed for further industrial growth with such businesses as grist and saw mills, porkpacking plants, and paper and tobacco plants. Today, Middletown is a steel-producing community with many other important industries. The construction of railroads and new roads and highways also played an important role in Middletown's growth. This work recalls many of the people that brought this success and development to Middletown. The everimproving cameras and the rise of the art of photography allowed much of this town's history to be captured on film. Many of these images, taken by both professionals and amateurs, are recorded in Middletown, Ohio. Join Mr. Miller and Mr. Crout in celebrating a community rich in history and heritage.
