Book The Other Shiites

Download or read book The Other Shiites written by Alessandro Monsutti and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shia Islam is a central issue in contemporary politics. Often associated with Iran, Shiite communities actually exist in many Islamic countries. Focusing on the «other Shiites» outside Iran, this book offers a survey of their diversity and multiplicity in the last two centuries. The contributions cover three major topics. The first part deals with the relationship of Shia minorities to the Sunni regimes. Secondly the public affirmation of their identities through specific rituals and social attitudes is analysed. Finally, the third part of this volume examines the strengthening of these identities through traditional religious rituals and cultural performances, or through the re-interpretation and adaptation of these to present-day life. Coming from various academic backgrounds, the authors have used different methodologies and have been engaged in field-work.

Book Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century written by Nile Green and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism is often regarded as standing mystically aloof from its wider cultural settings. By turning this perspective on its head, Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century reveals the politics and poetry of Indian Sufism through the study of Islamic sainthood in the midst of a cosmopolitan Indian society comprising migrants, soldiers, litterateurs and princes. Placing the mystical traditions of Indian Islam within their cultural contexts, this interesting study focuses on the shrines of four Sufi saints in the neglected Deccan region and their changing roles under the rule of the Mughals, the Nizams of Haydarabad and, after 1948, the Indian nation. In particular Green studies the city of Awrangabad, examining the vibrant intellectual and cultural history of this city as part of the independent state of Haydarabad. He employs a combination of historical texts and anthropological fieldwork, which provide a fresh perspective on developments of devotional Islam in South Asia over the past three centuries, giving a fuller understanding of Sufism and Muslim saints in South Asia.

Book Sai Baba of Shirdi English

Download or read book Sai Baba of Shirdi English written by V. B. Kher and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sai Baba of Shirdi is a phenomenon. In all of India s history, there has never been another like him. He is no conventional saint, he wrote no critique of any holy work, made no ashram or peetham, yet he had profound insight into both Hindu and Islamic scriptures. He performed miracles but in no manner or means to impress anyone, devotees or otherwise. Sai Baba in every way remains unique. He came in his late twenties to Shirdi, an insignificant Hamlet in Ahmednagar District where he spent fifty years of his remaining life. Shirdi is no longer an obscure village. Today it is a centre of pilgrimage for lakhs of Sai Baba s devotees. This book translated into Hindi is a complete account of his life and mission.Hindi Rs. 95 / Telugu Rs. 125

Book African Elites in India

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth X. Robbins
  • Publisher : Mapin Publishing Pvt
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book African Elites in India written by Kenneth X. Robbins and published by Mapin Publishing Pvt. This book was released on 2006 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sub-Saharan Africans have a longstanding and distinguished presence in India, where they are most commonly known as Habshis or Sidis. Habshi is the Arabic for an Abyssinian or Ethiopian, and Sidi is apparently derived from the Arabic sayyidi, "my lord". In the last decade there has been a veritable explosion of scholarship on Habshis and Sidis in India. This book is a contribution to this growing field, but with a difference. Rather than the groups hitherto studied, its focus is on the elite of Sub-Saharan African-Indian merchants, soldiers, nobles, statesmen, and rulers who attained prominence in various parts of India between the fifteenth and twentieth centuries, and on Africans who served at the courts of Indian monarchs as servants, slaves, eunuchs, or concubines. This book is a series of snapshots, in the form of essays by specialists in history, numismatics, architecture, the art history of South Asia, of colour and black-and-white illustrations." -- Jacket description.
