Book History of Maryland From the Earliest Period to the Present Day Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Maryland From the Earliest Period to the Present Day Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by J. Thomas Scharf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland From the Earliest Period to the Present Day, Vol. 1 of 3 Frequent citations have been made from other writers and incorporated into the text, sometimes with, and sometimes with out, a textual reference to the authority; but in all 'ases (it is believed) the source is indicated in the foot-notes. When docu ments are cited without reference, they are from the records of the Land Office. Or, if published, from the files of the Maryland Gazette, the official journal, or other newspapers of the day. It is greatly to be regretted that a large mass of docu ments, correspondence, etc., belonging to the prerevolutionary history of the province, has been so imperfectly cared for as to cause irreparable loss. Many papers have disappeared altogether; still more are perishing from decay, careless handling and improper stowage. The papers which properly should be assembled at one point, are scattered in different places. It is much to be wished that the Legislature of the State would make some provision for collecting and arranging these archives, and depositing them in some place of security; also for publishing those of greatest historical value. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical View of the Government of Maryland, Vol. 1: From Its Colonization to the Present Day Prefaces were formerly called apologies to the rea derz and although they have changed their name, they have not lost their original nature. They assume, for the reader, that he is ignorant of the subjects upon which the writer professes to instruct him; and for the writer, that he has enjoyed means of information denied to the reader. The writer of this work has no apologies to make, on its behalf, for any such assumptions. If it presupposes, that the people of Maryland require information upon its topics, it proceeds only upon what has been universally admitted with regret. If it implies that its writer has any peculiar knowledge to impart, he can at least say, that he has drawn it, principally, from records, and other memorials, of which the moth and rust, those decayers of all earthly things, have been the sole proprietors for more than half a century. If it claims for him competency to the task he has undertaken, it only arrogates the liberty of attempting, what all have declined, and many have pronounced im practicable. Book History of Maryland

Download or read book History of Maryland written by James McSherry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland: From Its First Settlement in 1634, to the Year 1848 In this work the author has endeavored to compress together, in a popular form, such events in the history of Maryland as would interest the general reader, and to give a simple narration of the settlement of the colony; its rise and progress; its troubles and revolutions; as well as the long periods of peace and serenity, which beautified its early days: - to picture the beginning, the progress, and the happy conclusion of the war of independence - the fortitude and valor of the sons of Maryland upon the field, and their wisdom in council. He has, therefore, dwelt upon those portions of the revolutionary battles, alone, in which they bore a conspicuous part. From the close of that war, and the adoption of the constitution of the United States, - mingling and identifying the most important parts of the history of the State, with that of the nation - he has only attempted to sketch out a few of the results, which have denoted its progress and prosperity, avoiding carefully, as unsuited to the object of his labors, the strifes and contentions of parties, however interesting a portion of its political history they may present. In conclusion, he tenders his acknowledgements to the president and other officers and members of the Maryland Historical Society, for the uniform kindness with which they have at all times afforded him access to their archives, and facilitated his researches among their valuable collections. Book History of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Maryland Classic Reprint written by James McSherry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland The editor of the work which it is the purpose of these brief preliminary words. To present to the public for its sufferance and, it is hoped, a measure of satisfaction, has held in mind during his labors certain facts which he conceived to be fundamental in his undertaking. Conformity of style and literary usage was regarded as important. Following the line of least resistance, he undertook to adapt the style of Mr. Mcsherry to that of his own rather than to affect a manner of writing which to him would have been forced and unnatural, and certainly to the reader clumsy and unrewarding. Numerous verbal changes have therefore been made throughout the text. A certain fulsomeness which appears especially in the eulogies in the work has been corrected. These and similar literary changes embrace the greater part of the exercise of the editorial function up to the chapter which relates to the close of the Revolutionary War. From that period to the end of the work the story was too meager to have linked to it the great subsequent events of Maryland's history. It thus became necessary to rewrite the work from that point, although in so doing everything of the author's has found incorporation, although not always in situ. A comparison with the original work will show the large extent of the amplification which was found to be necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Early History of Maryland The cultivation of tobacco appears to have been accompa nied by, if it did not produce the introduction of slavery in Maryland, negroes being already the labourers of other colonies, where that or sugar was planted; and, it was at this early day thought necessary by some, to deprive them of a full and equal enjoyment of the privileges or protection of the laws, as appears by one amongst a number of bills presented to this Assembly on different subjects, which however were not finally. Acted on or passed, at that time at least. In 1640, owing probably, to the obstructed intercourse with the, natives and the necessity of providing stores for the mili tary, the exportation of corn was prohibited; and three viewers or inspectors of tobacco were to be appointed by the com mander in every hundred, sometimes co-extensive with a county. When a hogshead should be found to contain bad tobacco for the greater part, it' was to be burned, and when not sealed for good, the exportation was prohibited under treble damages It was however not uncommon, even at a later period, to ship that article in bulk as we now do staves or other lumber. It was provided also, that in case of the death of the Governor, the first named of the council should act in his place until a new one was appointed by the proprietary.
