It is greatly to be regretted that a large mass of docu ments, correspondence, etc., belonging to the prerevolutionary history of the province, has been so imperfectly cared for as to cause irreparable loss. Many papers have disappeared altogether; still more are perishing from decay, careless handling and improper stowage. The papers which properly should be assembled at one point, are scattered in different places. It is much to be wished that the Legislature of the State would make some provision for collecting and arranging these archives, and depositing them in some place of security; also for publishing those of greatest historical value.
