Book History of Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Maryland Classic Reprint written by James McSherry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland The editor of the work which it is the purpose of these brief preliminary words. To present to the public for its sufferance and, it is hoped, a measure of satisfaction, has held in mind during his labors certain facts which he conceived to be fundamental in his undertaking. Conformity of style and literary usage was regarded as important. Following the line of least resistance, he undertook to adapt the style of Mr. Mcsherry to that of his own rather than to affect a manner of writing which to him would have been forced and unnatural, and certainly to the reader clumsy and unrewarding. Numerous verbal changes have therefore been made throughout the text. A certain fulsomeness which appears especially in the eulogies in the work has been corrected. These and similar literary changes embrace the greater part of the exercise of the editorial function up to the chapter which relates to the close of the Revolutionary War. From that period to the end of the work the story was too meager to have linked to it the great subsequent events of Maryland's history. It thus became necessary to rewrite the work from that point, although in so doing everything of the author's has found incorporation, although not always in situ. A comparison with the original work will show the large extent of the amplification which was found to be necessary. Book History of Dorchester County Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Dorchester County Maryland Classic Reprint written by Elias Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dorchester County, Maryland This fragmentary collection of local history and biography is only a glimpse at the interesting events occurring in Dorchester County from its origin, two hundred and thirty-three years ago, to the present day. In compiling this local record, references to State events and people have been frequently made in order to explain the cause and effect of local acts which have had their influences in county affairs. Especially has it been the purpose to note the names of the promoters of the county as well as to mention their deeds. In this fast age of book and newspaper literature when every inmate of the American home must daily read the current his tory of the world as it transpires, there is no reasonable excuse why a history of Dorchester County Should not be published. It has been the desire of the author to give a truthful narration of the events treated, and while the diction may not be all that could be desired, it is set forth as an earnest effort, to which the reader is asked to bestow that indulgence which the work merits. If due credit has not been given, either by reference or quotation, for any language used in this book, it is an act of unintentional omission. Book Tales of Old Maryland

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Old Maryland: History and Romance on the Eastern Shore of Maryland It is not to be supposed that the sketches contained in this little volume cover all those places and persons of the Eastern Shore that might be justly entitled to an appearance here. I have merely collected those which in my humble opinion were the most interesting and were more available. I am one of those who think the Eastern Shore of Maryland the "Garden Spot" of the World - have been taught that from the cradle up. Many of the tales told here are some we have heard since childhood, and as this is an inquiring age, in recent years I have looked into them a little to ascertain just how much was fiction and how much was truth. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of University Education in Maryland The State Of Maryland has been almost extravagantly liberal in bestowing charters on colleges and professional schools. Over forty such charters have been given by the legislature and, in many cases, the result has proved that the gift of a charter was not warranted by the stability Of the institution, to which was thus granted the power of conferring degrees. In many other cases, however, the institutions have grown and flourished, and have had an honorable history. Book The Story of Maryland Politics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Maryland Politics Classic Reprint written by Frank R. Kent and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Maryland Politics This book does not profess to be a wholly complete political history of Maryland. The data for such a volume cannot be obtained because it does not exist. What I have attempted to do is to tell the political story of the State from the close of the Civil War to the present time, as accurately as possible and without bias. I have tried to give the facts about every political struggle worth telling about; to trace the rise and fall of the political factors in each; to show their relations to each other, the way they played politics and the kind of men they were. I have sought to picture every campaign made in the State since 1864, to give the names of the men nominated for the principal offices and those elected, to show the political causes that swept them in and out of office, the source from which they arrived their power and the way in which they used it. The "inside" and unpublished politics of the many notable fights that have been waged in this State is here given and it has also seemed worth while to compile the names of the men who have represented Maryland in the Legislature and in Congress since 1880, in that there exists no other record of these men, and unless put in a form where they can be preserved, all recollection of them is bound to fade. It has taken nearly two years to gather the data upon which this book is based. In that time I have sought and obtained from men who were in the thick of the fights the information necessary to write the real story of the times. As the political reporter of the Baltimore Sun from 1900 to 1910, I had unusual opportunities for knowing the real politics played between those years. Prior to 1900, my information had to come from others and from the files of the Baltimore newspapers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland: With Brief Biographies of Distinguished Statesmen, Philanthropists, Theologians, Etc;, And the Constitution of the State; Prepared for the Schools of Maryland The province of a text-book in History designed for use in schools is to present briefly and clearly historical facts uncolored by personal prejudice. While it is possible in a book of this description to preserve a clue regard for the "logic of events," and to render the story to a certain degree attractive, yet much that is of interest in biography, in incident, and in descriptions of manners and customs will, of necessity, be omitted. All that should be reasonably expected will have been accomplished, if, in addition to a knowledge of the outlines of History imparted by a work of this kind, the desire is awakened for more extended information concerning the characters and events therein mentioned or described. In accordance with these ideas, the author has written this History of Maryland, bringing to the task an extended public-school experience. He has also been fortunate in having the advice and assistance of several prominent residents of the State, whose intimate knowledge of its history affords a guarantee of the general correctness of the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings of Maryland, 1631 1639 The twenty-fifth of March is the day on which the first colonists sent out by Lord Baltimore landed on the soil of Maryland. In 1903, that day was celebrated throughout the schools of the State as Maryland Day, and the establishment of that custom seems to make a re statdment of the beginnings of the settlement of the Province, a task worthy of accomplishment. The at tempt is here made to trace these beginnings, with the same minute care with which the citizens of Massachusetts have traced the beginnings of their Commonwealth. NO one has attempted to do this in an elaborate fashion, since the publication of the Archives of Maryland has unlocked the treasures of our [early records. A careful study of these printed records yields many new details, and ad ditional facts of interest, with reference to the Kent Island Colony, are found in the manuscript records of the English Court of Admiralty. Book History of Maryland

Download or read book History of Maryland written by James McSherry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Maryland: From Its First Settlement in 1634, to the Year 1848 In this work the author has endeavored to compress together, in a popular form, such events in the history of Maryland as would interest the general reader, and to give a simple narration of the settlement of the colony; its rise and progress; its troubles and revolutions; as well as the long periods of peace and serenity, which beautified its early days: - to picture the beginning, the progress, and the happy conclusion of the war of independence - the fortitude and valor of the sons of Maryland upon the field, and their wisdom in council. He has, therefore, dwelt upon those portions of the revolutionary battles, alone, in which they bore a conspicuous part. From the close of that war, and the adoption of the constitution of the United States, - mingling and identifying the most important parts of the history of the State, with that of the nation - he has only attempted to sketch out a few of the results, which have denoted its progress and prosperity, avoiding carefully, as unsuited to the object of his labors, the strifes and contentions of parties, however interesting a portion of its political history they may present. In conclusion, he tenders his acknowledgements to the president and other officers and members of the Maryland Historical Society, for the uniform kindness with which they have at all times afforded him access to their archives, and facilitated his researches among their valuable collections.
