To present to the public for its sufferance and, it is hoped, a measure of satisfaction, has held in mind during his labors certain facts which he conceived to be fundamental in his undertaking. Conformity of style and literary usage was regarded as important. Following the line of least resistance, he undertook to adapt the style of Mr. Mcsherry to that of his own rather than to affect a manner of writing which to him would have been forced and unnatural, and certainly to the reader clumsy and unrewarding. Numerous verbal changes have therefore been made throughout the text. A certain fulsomeness which appears especially in the eulogies in the work has been corrected. These and similar literary changes embrace the greater part of the exercise of the editorial function up to the chapter which relates to the close of the Revolutionary War. From that period to the end of the work the story was too meager to have linked to it the great subsequent events of Maryland's history. It thus became necessary to rewrite the work from that point, although in so doing everything of the author's has found incorporation, although not always in situ. A comparison with the original work will show the large extent of the amplification which was found to be necessary. The data for such a volume cannot be obtained because it does not exist. What I have attempted to do is to tell the political story of the State from the close of the Civil War to the present time, as accurately as possible and without bias. I have tried to give the facts about every political struggle worth telling about; to trace the rise and fall of the political factors in each; to show their relations to each other, the way they played politics and the kind of men they were. I have sought to picture every campaign made in the State since 1864, to give the names of the men nominated for the principal offices and those elected, to show the political causes that swept them in and out of office, the source from which they arrived their power and the way in which they used it. The "inside" and unpublished politics of the many notable fights that have been waged in this State is here given and it has also seemed worth while to compile the names of the men who have represented Maryland in the Legislature and in Congress since 1880, in that there exists no other record of these men, and unless put in a form where they can be preserved, all recollection of them is bound to fade. It has taken nearly two years to gather the data upon which this book is based. In that time I have sought and obtained from men who were in the thick of the fights the information necessary to write the real story of the times. As the political reporter of the Baltimore Sun from 1900 to 1910, I had unusual opportunities for knowing the real politics played between those years. He has, therefore, dwelt upon those portions of the revolutionary battles, alone, in which they bore a conspicuous part. From the close of that war, and the adoption of the constitution of the United States, - mingling and identifying the most important parts of the history of the State, with that of the nation - he has only attempted to sketch out a few of the results, which have denoted its progress and prosperity, avoiding carefully, as unsuited to the object of his labors, the strifes and contentions of parties, however interesting a portion of its political history they may present. In conclusion, he tenders his acknowledgements to the president and other officers and members of the Maryland Historical Society, for the uniform kindness with which they have at all times afforded him access to their archives, and facilitated his researches among their valuable collections.
