Book Theirs Not To Reason Why

Download or read book Theirs Not To Reason Why written by Graham Winton and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated for the Royal Historical Society Whitfield Book Prize 2013 Nominated for the NYMAS Arthur Goodzeit Book Award 2013 Nominated for the SAHR Templer Medal 2013 This book provides the first comprehensive study of the British Army’s horse services between 1875-1925, including the use of horses in the 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer and the 1914-18 wars. There is a particular focus on the military procurement of horses in relation to the domestic horse breeding industry, foreign supply in times of war, the debate about mechanization versus the horse and an integrated military transport system. During the 1899-1902 war the recently created Army Veterinary and Remount Departments and Horse Registration Scheme were severely tested and found wanting. Following the appalling suffering and loss of horses during this War, the period 1902 to 1914 was critical for the development of the horse services. The crucial elements in effectively horsing the Army were recognized - supply, care, and organization. The Army depended on the creation of a rapid and effective horse mobilization scheme and the ability to sustain expansion in the field. The civilian horse market was central to the supply of military horses in peace and war, and by obtaining reliable information on the number and type of horses available to them, the Army could guarantee a regular supply. There was also a need to learn lessons from the 1899-1902 war for the planning and expansion of auxiliary services, for example blacksmiths, saddlers, remount depots and veterinary hospitals. On the outbreak of war in 1914 the Army had an organized reserve and mobilization scheme; a completely integrated transport system using horses, mechanized vehicles and rail networks. As the war progressed there were serious questions about the continuing supply of horses from both home and world markets, shortages of transport for moving them from the country of purchase and the growing submarine menace. Developments by 1919 in mechanical vehicles were acknowledged by many as signaling the end of the military reliance upon the horse, even though it remained the main source of motive power, and cavalry the main arm of exploitation. Many lessons from the 1899-1902 War had been learnt, shown in the improved performance of the horse services during 1914-18. The health of animals was maintained at a higher standard than in any former war and remounts were supplied to all theaters of war and to armies of allied nations. At the end of hostilities nearly eight million animals had to be quickly disposed of, as humanely as possible, to bring the Army back to its peacetime requirements

Book The Desert Mounted Corps

Download or read book The Desert Mounted Corps written by R. M. P. Preston and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Desert Mounted Corps was an army corps of the British Army of three mounted divisions during the First World War. These divisions comprised ANZAC Mounted Division, the Australian Mounted Division, and the Yeomanry Mounted Division. They operated in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. The Desert Mounted Corps started with Australians, New Zealanders, British Yeomanry, Territorial Horse Artillery, and Indian Cavalry, with French Cavalry added to the final operations. This History begins with an account of the reorganization of the British Troops in the Egyptian area of the War when Sir Edmund Allenby took over authority in June 1917. It explains the struggles of the soldiers during the war, including several hardships faced by them due to the harsh weather conditions of the area. As work on cavalry tactics, it will be of great interest and value to the student of Military History. Lieut.-Col. Preston served his country by explaining that the horse-soldier was just as beneficial in modern warfare as in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Cavalry, which began in the nineteenth century as little more than a mounted reconnaissance and harrying force, underwent intense growing pains with the rapid technological developments of the twentieth century. From its tentative beginnings during World War I, the eventual conversion of the traditional horse cavalry to a mechanized branch is arguably one of the greatest military transformations in history. Through Mobility We Conquer recounts the evolution and development of the U.S. Army's modern mechanized cavalry and the doctrine necessary to use it effectively. The book also explores the debates over how best to use cavalry and how these discussions evolved during the first half of the century. During World War I, the first cavalry theorist proposed combining arms coordination with a mechanized force as an answer to the stalemate on the Western Front. Hofmann brings the story through the next fifty years, when a new breed of cavalrymen became cold war warriors as the U.S. Constabulary was established as an occupation security-police force. Having reviewed thousands of official records and manuals, military journals, personal papers, memoirs, and oral histories -- many of which were only recently declassified -- George F. Hofmann now presents a detailed study of the doctrine, equipment, structure, organization, tactics, and strategy of U.S. mechanized cavalry during the changing international dynamics of the first half of the twentieth century. Illustrated with dozens of photographs, maps, and charts, Through Mobility We Conquer examines how technology revolutionized U.S. forces in the twentieth century and demonstrates how perhaps no other branch of the military underwent greater changes during this time than the cavalry.
