Book excerpt: Excerpt from London, Vol. 2: Being an Accurate History and Description of the British Metropolis and Its Neighbourhood, to Thirty Miles Extent, From an Actual Perambulation It may not here be amiss, to give the reader, from a late ingenious publication, some idea of the immense enhanced value of many manu factures, from their first raw or unimproved material, to their produce at a market. One hundred pounds, says this author, laid out in wool, and that wool manufactured into goods for the Turkey market, 'pnd raw silk brought home in return, and manufactured here, will ia crease that one hundred pounds to five thousand pounds - which quan tity of silk manufactures being sent to New Spain, would return ten thousand pounds - which vast improvement of the first hundred pounds, becomes, in a few years, dispersed among all orders and degrees, from the prince to the peasant. Thus, again, a parcel of iron-stone, which, when first taken from its natural bed, was not worth five shillings, when made into iron and steel, and thence into various manufactures for foreign markets, may probably bring home to the amount of ten thousand pounds. Steel may be made near three hundred times dearer than standard gold, weight for weight - for, six of the finest steel wire springs, for watch pendulums, shall weigh butone grain; and, when applied by our best artists, they shall be worth 7s. 6d. Each, or 2i. For the six, or two hundred and seventy-two pences; whereas one grain of gold is but worth two-pence. Again, twenty acres of fine ax. Book The Tower of London Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tower of London Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Ronald Sutherland Gower and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tower of London, Vol. 2 of 2 Owing to the plague then raging in London, the customary procession at the coronation was omitted, although the King rode in state from the Tower to Westminster, preparatory to the Opening of his first Parliament on 1sth Of March 1605, as the Londoners had made their welcome for him ready. In Mr Sidney Lee's Life of Shakespeare, he states that Shakespeare, with eight other players of the King's company of actors, walked from the Tower of London to Westminster in the procession which accompanied the King in his formal entry into London. Each actor received four and a half yards of scarlet cloth to wear as a cloak on the occasion, and in the document authorising the grant, Shakespeare's name stands first on the list. This is the only time that we can positively know that Shakespeare was ever at the Tower; but his frequent introduction Of the fortress into his historical dramas makes it certain that he must often have visited a place so full of dramatic episodes and historical memories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Survey of London and Its Environs, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time A dispute arose at this time, between the tenants of the Bishop of Ely and the lord mayor of Lon don, respecting the exercise of the mayor's authority among them: the dispute was referred to the lord keeper, the two chief justices, and the chancellor of the exchequer, who determined it in favour of the city; and that, for the future, the mayor might as justly exercise his authority in the bishop's rents, in Holborn, as in any other part of the city. It will probably astonish those, who look for the. Perfection of civilization under Elizabeth, to hear that the trial by combat might be legally demanded dur ing her reign; and that the judges of the common pleas actually sat in Tothill-fields, Westminster, on the 18th of J une, ' 1, to decide by such pleadings; but, judging from the relation of the circumstance in Bowes's Chronicle, p. 668, it is probable that some compromise had taken place, to bring the question before the judges in a more civil way; since a deci sion was given against one of the parties, on a pre tended non-appearance, although his champion was in court. An act of parliament was passed in this year, directing a new cut or trench to be made at the charge of the mayor, commonalty, and citizens of London, whereby the river Lea was to be made to convey all victuals, corn, and other necessaries, from the town of Ware to the. City of London, and from London to Ware. By this means the conveyance of grain and other provisions out of Hertfordshire was greatly facilitated, and a considerable expense of land carriage saved. In the same year the streets in the eastern suburbs of London, as far as Whitechapel-bars, were, by an act of parliament, ordered to be paved.
