Book The Correspondence of Lord Acton and Richard Simpson Volume 2

Download or read book The Correspondence of Lord Acton and Richard Simpson Volume 2 written by Josef L. Altholz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Acton (1834-1902) and Richard Simpson (1820-76) were the principal figures in the Liberal Catholic movement of nineteenth-century England, an ultimately unsuccessful effort to reconcile the Roman Catholic Church with the leading secular thought of the day. They collaborated in editing the Rambler (1858-62) and the Home and Foreign Review (1862-4), two of the most distinguished Catholic periodicals of the period. The correspondence is the record of this collaboration and sheds light on the religious, political and intellectual history of mid-nineteenth-century England. Though heaviest for the years of their joint work on the Rambler and the Home and Foreign Review, the correspondence continued up to 1875, a year before Simpson's death.

Download or read book History of Liberty Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Samuel Eliot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Liberty, Vol. 1 of 2 The Old liberty was the liberty of rulers. As such it was remembered. As such it was the object of longings and strivings on the part of those by whom, or by whose ancestors, it had once been pos sessed. The loss which they felt most keenly was that of dominion. The gain of dominion was that for which they struggled most resolutely. They thought themselves struggling for liberty. They thought themselves lamenting for liberty. But it was because liberty and dominion had been one and the same throughout the ancient ages. Liberty had belonged to none but rulers. To recover or to preserve such a liberty as this, was not the want of mankind. The ruling classes of the West and of the East constituted but a small portion of the generations then existing. Not one man out of a thousand, out of a million, but was a subject in one or in another degree. The great need was of a liberty which should belong to these multitudinous Subjects as well as to their scattered rulers. The liberty of the ruler had failed. The liberty of the subject was the liberty now required. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sketches of the History of Man in Two Volumes

Download or read book Sketches of the History of Man in Two Volumes written by Lord Henry Home Kames and published by . This book was released on 1774 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following work is the substance of various speculations, that occasionally amused the author, and enlivened his leisure-hours. It is not intended for the learned; they are above it: nor for the vulgar; they are below it. It is intended for men, who, equally removed from the corruption of opulence, and from the depression of bodily labour, are bent on useful knowledge; who, even in the delirium of youth, feel the dawn of patriotism, and who in riper years enjoy its meridian warmth. To such men this work is dedicated; and that they may profit by it, is the author's ardent wish, and probably will be while any spirit remains in him to form a wish"--Preface. I have, however, ventured not only to do this, but to wander beyond the limits Of the Roman conquests, and to describe, as far as I could, the various stages in the progress Of the ancient world; so that the place Of the Commonwealth Of Rome in universal history might, perhaps, be made more Obvious. The eighth chapter Of the Intro duction will complete the explanation I can here but promise beforehand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
