Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Lee County, Being Some Chapters in the History, of the Early Days in Lee County, Illinois This is not an effort to write a history of any man or any locality. The sole purpose of the work is the collection and preservation of the scarce and almost inaccessible evidence of some of the men and events prominent in the early days of Lee County. It was not prepared to sustain any theory or tradition, but every effort within my power has been made to learn all the facts concerning these men and events and state them correctly. Some old traditions have been shattered, but they were not sustained by the facts, and many of them had no foundation except the loose talk of persons who were ignorant of the matters of which they spoke. Some of my old beliefs, held and cherished since early childhood, have been dispelled, but they were founded upon misinformation. Reference is made to some public record, report or document whenever one could be found. When such evidence could not be had, my resort was to newspapers, private letters or records or books written or published about that time, in the belief that such contemporaneous statements are more likely to be free from error than those made years afterwards. In some instances the private records and the public records differ, and the latter are followed, the entries being contemporaneous with the event. Every statement of fact is based on evidence of one of the kinds mentioned, though references have been omitted in some places. Removing west ward to Illinois in 1852, they settled in Livingston county and afterward came to Lee county, first establishing their home near Amboy but afterward taking up their abode in Marion township in 1863. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Lee County, Illinois, Vol. 1 With the beginning of civilization in Lee county, Rock river was the dividing line between the Winnebagoes and the Pottawatomies, the former to the west of the river, the latter to the east, and southerly to the Illinois river. Down stream the Winnebagoes occupied the country as far as the prophet's village, now Prophetstown in Whiteside county. Farther down the Sacs and Foxes occupied the country and their village, about two miles from the mouth, was the largest Indian village in Northern Illinois and one of the largest in the state. Of course these four tribes intermingled and intermarried in a measure and to that extent dwelt together in harmony. To state arbitrarily what Indians first occupied Lee county would subject the writer to ridicule. It will be my design therefore in looking backward after the earlier aborigines to use the earliest written information: "Charlevoix," annotated by that eminent and accurate scholar, John Gilmary Shea; "The Jesuit Relations," annotated by Reuben Gold Thwaites; "Handbook of American Indians," by Frederick Webb Hodge; the "Wisconsin Historical Collections"; "Schoolcraft," McKenney and Hall; Carver; Reports of Secretary of War; "The Indian Tribes of the Upper Mississippi Valley," by Emma Helen Blair, and other works. The Illinois or Illinois Confederation of Algonquin tribes, occupied the Rock river country in 1722. This confederation was composed of the Cahokias, Kaskaskias, Michigameas, (spelled in many ways), Peorias, and Tamaroas. Hodge has added the Moingwena tribes.
