Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Huron County, Ohio, Vol. 2: Its Progress and Development Since again taking up his abode in Norwalk, Mr. Gallup has been prominently and actively interested in business affairs and in other interests relating to the welfare and progress of the community. From 1873 until 1883, he was connected with the promotion and construction of the Wheeling Lake Erie Railroad. And for three years, beginning in 1877, served on its board of directors. In 1888, he was associated with other substantial business men in founding the financially successful Home Savings Loan Company of Norwalk. At which time he was chosen president and one of the directors, his official connection therewith con tinning to the present. He has also extended his efforts to other fields of activity, becoming one of the directors and a member of the executive committee of the Toledo, Fremont Norwalk Electric Railway at the time of its construction in 1899. In the summer of 1881, disaster struck, as 1,500 square miles of forest burned. Huron County rose again, replacing lumbering with agriculture as its major industry. This agricultural tradition, along with commercial fishing, continues to this day. In Huron County, Michigan the Huron County Historical Society showcases the histories of the communities of Bad Axe, Bay Port and Ora Labora, Caseville, Elkton, Harbor Beach and Port Hope, Pigeon, Port Austin, Sebewaing, Ubly, and White Rock, using over 200 vintage photographs. Stop by the Caseville Mercantile or visit the old Caseville High School. Go back in time to the 1933 Sebewaing Farmers and Merchants parade that wound its way through the downtown area. A 1920s Prohibition scene comes to life in Bad Axe as Deputy Duncan McKenzie dumps illegal whiskey into the sewer at the site of today's "old City Hall."
