Book History of New Haven Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of New Haven Illinois Classic Reprint written by Jimmie Chastain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Haven, Illinois This book was written as a project in teaching Jimmie, who, as many of you well know, is paralyzed, both hands and both feet, and has been for about ten years. It was entirely his idea, but as we worked it grew much like the proverbial snowball. Through this project we have learned something of reading, writing, spelling, language composition, history and geography and their relation to everyday life in his home town. Writing is much more of a task for Jimmie than many of you may realize and his perseverance and good spirit are highly commendable. Many changes have taken place here since the good old days and every one will agree it is a much better place to live now than it was then. We appreciate your advice, encouragement and help. If you enjoy reading the book as much as we have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Martyrs and Heroes of Illinois in the Great Rebellion

Download or read book The Martyrs and Heroes of Illinois in the Great Rebellion written by James Barnet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Martyrs and Heroes of Illinois in the Great Rebellion: Biographical Sketches The sixteenth President of the United States was the son of Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, and was born in Hardin (now Larue) county, Kentucky, on the 12th of February, 1809. When he reached his seventh year, he was sent to a school kept by Caleb Hazel, who lived in the neighborhood of his father's log cabin, and whose exercises consisted of the two fundamental branches - reading and writing. Owing to the family moving to another State, Abraham had to relinquish his practiced studies for a life of hard work on his father's farm, a year covering the entire schooling he received. The journey from Kentucky to Spencer county, Indiana, he has been heard to declare, constituted one of his hardest trials of pioneer experience. Hardy toil, blended with sport in the woods with his rifle, simple but healthy fare, and repose in a loft, beneath the roof of the hut, formed the daily routine of outward physical being of our hero, and such an existence as imparted vigor and strength to his system. Book Fifty Years Ago Or Gleanings Respecting the History of Northern Illinois

Download or read book Fifty Years Ago Or Gleanings Respecting the History of Northern Illinois written by G. H. Woodruff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years Ago; Or, Gleanings Respecting the History of Northern Illinois: A Few Years Previous to and During the Black Hawk War Having been somewhat instrumental in fixing on the 2nd day of August as the day for the Pioneers Re-union for 1882 in Will county, and in giving to the meeting a semi-centennial odor, we felt called upon to justify our course by a brief review of the events of fifty years ago, particularly as they related to this portion of Northern Illinois. Hence, the series of Historical Gleanings, which appeared in the Republic during the few weeks preceding the meeting. It was believed that while there were a few of our older citizens to whom the events were a memory, yet the later generation were, for the most part ignorant of them, and likely to remain so, inasmuch as the accounts of them which have been preserved are scattered through various county histories, local sketches and pamphlets, which are not accessible to the general public without more trouble than most persons would be willing to take. It was thought, therefore, that it would be a good thing to gather up the facts and incidents and to weave them into a connected narrative, which would post all who desire it in the history of this region fifty years ago. Some of our friends have flattered us with the suggestion that they were worthy of re-publication in a more convenient form for preservation. We only claim for them that they are gleanings, although considerable has been obtained by personal conversation and correspondence with living survivors, who were actors and sufferers in the events narrated. Wherever we have found a statement bearing upon the subject we have appropriated it without a scruple, giving, generally, the source of information. The first pages go back to an earlier date, but it will be seen that they lead up to the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bishop Hill Colony: A Religious Communistic Settlement in Henry County, Illinois The Bishop Hill Colony was incidentally an experiment in practical communism. Perhaps also this Side of its history may not be void of interest or profit in our day, when social improvement is sought largely along similar lines. It is now, indeed, thirty years since the society was dissolved, and cir cumstances have been modified by the advance of civilization and the progress of the industrial revolution. But human nature is substantially the same to-day as in the day of our fathers and grandfathers, and many of the difficulties which the J ansonists encountered must be met again in any attempt to apply the theories of modern socialism to practical life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illinois Boyhood And yet the church meant more to Hope than any club. It had a kind of music that wound itself into the memory. Not the wheezing cottage organ. Not the dry hymns. Not the drone of the preacher. But the music of rich, proud words from the Bible falling upon ears that had heard them again and again and now heard them chime with old recol lections. The silence during prayer. The hush at communion. All sorts of thoughts and feelings, of course, ran through the passive minds of the worshipers: vows, fears, loves, hates, lusts, resentments, repentances, forecasts, griefs, triumphs. But they had in common one strain of piety, a sense of rev erence toward a ceremonial which had become a part of them, reaching back to their childhood, and bringing them at each repetition the accumulated experience of solemn hours. This piety was Hope's religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
