Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Gustavus Adolphus Among the persons whose genius, heroism, and force of character influenced events, and won commanding fame, in the seventeenth century, Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden is justly regarded of the first. The War of Thirty Years, a long and terrible struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism, largely influenced by the rivalry and bitter hostility between France and the House of Austria, called out the strong qualities of the Swedish king. The influence of his reign on his own country, and of his career in Germany on the prospects of Protestantism in continental Europe, will always constitute an interesting theme for historical students and readers. A military man of remarkable powers, his high moral qualities and lofty purposes forbid his standing in the category of the Alexanders, the Marlboroughs, and Napoleons. As fascinating as romance, thrilling with all that is exciting and terrible in war, his life is perused with interest and profit by those who wish to understand some of the most momentous events which have influenced the history of the modem world. The author has read and carefully considered whatever might throw light on his character and career. To this end he has studied the best Swedish, German, French, and English writers on the subject, and has improved suggestive conversations with Swedish scholars and statesmen; and this volume is the result. He realizes its imperfection and inadequacy as a full statement of the genius and work of the remarkable personage it attempts to represent About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Life of Gustavus Adolphus II: The Hero-General of the Reformation In giving this sketch of the life of Gustavus Adolphus, no attempt has been made to present a complete life of the great king. It is a history difficult for young people to understand, and for that reason only the leading events of a most eventful life have been presented. It was first written for a lecture and entertainment, after the manner of my other entertainments on Church epochs, to be illustrated by stereopticon views, with three dramatic interludes - the first representing the joy of the Swedish people on Gustavus coming to the throne; the second showing Gustavus taking leave of his Parliament and friends as he is about to embark on the Thirty Years' War; the third, an act called "The Women who Loved Him." The evening was to open and close with church processionals in the native peasant costumes of Sweden and other Protestant countries of Europe. It has been deemed best to present the story in book form, which will differ somewhat from the original lecture and dramatic representations, for the reason that pictures do away with the necessity for many words. With the earnest prayer that this history may stir other heroic souls to stand for God in life's difficult places this sketch is submitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Life of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, Sirnamed the Great, Vol. 1 For these reasons I threw my materials aside; and after such a frankness and generosity of confession, it is natural to conclude that I shall procure my pardon from the public on easy terms. Yet the dye was cast, that I should disturb the tranquillity of readers by some means or other, and enter their closets unsought-for with my literary present: That I do so is certain; but 'tis with respect and diffidence, and the little delineation I make them a tender of, carries this flight recommendation with it, that it is an original sketch, and not an imitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Life of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, Sirnamed the Great, Vol. 2 Soon after he invaded Hesse, and having joined himself with Aldringer, Fugger, and Mansfelt, advanced (whilst his majesty invested Marienberg) as far as Fulda, in order to succour the bishop of Wurtzburg, and shelter the electors of Cologn, Mentz and Triers. But in short, this great commander, in the present conjuncture, hardly knew what steps to take: mortified with misfortune, and piqued to the heart upon having made a shipwreck of one half of his glory, he was quite bewildered in his own ideas, having nothing certain to resolve upon, except it was to regain his character by some service of a desperate nature. And this, it is manifest, he ought to have attempted; but the Lorrainers did not join him quite so soon as he wished, and when that junction was formed at Miltenberg, he fell suddenly into a kind of despondence, for he did not like the aspects of his new assistants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gustavus Adolphus: And the Struggle of Protestantism for Existence The following account of the life of King Gustavus Adolphus, the national hero of Sweden, demands little preface. It makes no pretensions to be based upon original research, and I cannot claim have read even all the modern authorities on the subject. My knowledge of the Swedish language is by no means independent of the assistance of a dictionary, nor can I hope to have escaped that tendency to partiality for which the natural fascination of such a subject is the only excuse. The work was undertaken, and the material partly gathered, before I was aware that it was to have the honour of forming one of a series of biographies. The difficulty of accommodating its proportions to that object has not been inconsiderable. I am on the one hand debarred from giving the references which in many places I should have desired to give, and on the other hand obliged to include accounts of many things of which I had made no special study. The military history of the Thirty Years' War is in itself a case in point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lion of the North: A Tale of the Times of Gustavus Adolphus and the Wars of Religion We are, at least many of us are, lamentably ignorant of the leading events of even the most important epochs of Continental history, although, as many of these events have exercised a marked influence upon the existing state of affairs in Europe, a knowledge of them is far more useful, and, it may be said, far more interesting than that of the comparatively petty affairs of Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Thebes. Prominent among such epochs is the Thirty Years' War, which arose from the determination of the Emperor of Austria to crush Pro testantism throughout Germany. Since the invasion of the Huns no struggle which has taken place in Europe has approached this in the obstinacy of the fighting and the terrible sufferings which the war inflicted upon the people at large. During these thirty years the population of Germany decreased by nearly a third, and in some of the states half the towns and two-thirds of the villages absolutely disappeared. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gustavus Adolphus, an Historical Poem and Romance of the Thirty Years War The following pages owe their inspiration to hero-worship - to a sincere and even enthusiastic admiration for the gallant King of Sweden, whose glorious achievements they record, and whose noble character and generous sentiments they seek to illustrate. The Author, fully sensible of the inadequacy of his powers to do justice to the theme, still feels that no worthier subject could fill the pages of poet or historian. Among modern heroes the great Gustavus Adolphus stands forth, conspicuous no less for his moral excellence than for his soldierly qualities, his dauntless courage, stubborn perseverance, fertility of resource, and consummate skill. His life and actions are well known, and will not soon be forgotten either by Protestants or Catholics. Not only in works devoted to his personal biography, but also in those treating of the Thirty Years' War, he has received that abundant eulogy he so well merited. The greatest Genius of his age, his failings were more venial, his errors fewer and slighter, than those usually incidental to men of heroic mould; neither contemporary jealousy nor envious time, which has sapped so many reputations, has cast a doubt on the purity of his motives or the honesty of his purposes. Download or read book The Life of Gustavus Adolphus written by J. F. Hollings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Gustavus Adolphus: Surnamed the Great, King of Sweden The wider and more lasting extension of good. Amidst such recorded events, the celebrated War of Thirty Years in Germany is invested with the highest degree of interest-not only from the obstinacy of the struggle, but as exhibiting in its simplest and most intelligible form the conflict of principles which have since been happily so far modified in most civilised countries by a more general recognition of the prin ciples of equity, as often to be with difficulty dis coverable in their still continued opposition. Considering the reputation obtained by the most prominent Character in this momentous contest at the time of his decease, it is somewhat singular that more than a century was suffered to pass away after that event before any biographer appeared willing to undertake the task of recording the principal occur reaces of his life in any of the more popular languages of Europe. The splendid abilities of Frederick of Prussia, displayed during the sanguinary and pro tracted contest which arose from the question of the Pragmatic Sanction, and in the early part of the Seven Years' War, seem first to have recalled the general attention to the exploits of Gustavus Adolph us; while the circumstance of the same countries becoming the theatre of hostilities, which had formerly been tra versed by the armies of the Empire, Saxony and Sweden in the Thirty Years' War, naturally tended to endue with fresh interest a series of long-past events.
