Book Wicked Springfield Missouri

Download or read book Wicked Springfield Missouri written by Larry Wood and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its founding in the early 1830s, Springfield was a rough frontier town where whiskey flowed freely, gunplay and fistfights abounded and gambling thrived. The Civil War not only brought the horror of warfare home to Springfield but also introduced worldly vices like prostitution that were scarcely known in previous years. Yet throughout its history, Springfield has managed to maintain a veneer of respectability not shared by certain other towns of southwest Missouri that were founded as wild, wide-open mining camps, like Joplin and Granby. Join Larry Wood as he digs beneath the surface of Queen City history to expose notorious characters and capers that would make even Joplinites blush.

Download or read book Creating Community written by Mara W. Cohen Ioannides and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-17 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Community expands the written histories of Springfield that have long overlooked this minority in the local community. It also adds to the growing study of small Jewish communities around the United States. Springfield is both Southern and Midwestern in flavor and this is reflected in the Jewish community's development that has examples of both. Jews have been part of the economic development of the town since the 1860s. Since then, they have also been involved in fraternal and social organizations, politics, and education. This is not a complete history, but its purpose is not to be encyclopedic, rather it is to exemplify how this minority group were part of the growth the Queen City of the Ozarks.
