Book History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Alexandre Rodolphe Vinet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Let us not consider as mere chance, gentlemen, a state of mind, which is easily explained. The seventeenth century is the logical sequence, the natural production of the sixteenth. In reference to philosophy and thought in general, the human mind always proceeds in this manner: it makes progress by antithesis and reaction, and resembles the pendulum, which unceasingly oscillates from right to left and from left to right. But the pendulum moves in a fixed space, and the value of one of its oscillations is constantly compensated by that of the other, while the action and reaction of the human mind do not entirely destroy each other, some quantity remains, and these quantities, added together, make up the sum of its progress. At the first glance, man seems to us to undo to the same extent what he has already done; but if we extend the field of our observation, we shall be convinced of the real and gradual advancement of human nature. Whether this advancement is for good or evil, is a different question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What are the facts upon which it was based? How, and where did it arise, and under the influence of what circumstances? Such is the problem which I have attempted to solve. It seemed to me that the origins and successive forms of the influence of the classical Spirit upon the French genius had been studied repeatedly and at great length, but that the origins of the cosmopolitan spirit, which had assailed and threatened to supplant that influence, had been less frequently - and very inaccurately - dealt with. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman in France During the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2 The same warning-voice which had so boldly upbraided the vices of Louis XV., calling on the guilty sovereign to repent ere the hour of repentance should have once more gone by, now ushered in the opening reign with accents of prophetic woe. Jean of Beauvais, bishop of Senez, was enjoined to preach the funeral sermon of the deceased monarchy whom he had so unsparingly censured in all the pomp and pride of his kingly power. The austere prelate belonged to the strict and uncompromising portion of the French clergy; he fulfilled his arduous task with mournful but courageous severity. The aspect of perishable mortality could not awe him into pitying and treacherous silence or make him flatter, with lying lips, the many errors of the royal dead. He spared them not: openly alluding to the unpopularity of Louis XV. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
