Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Freemasonry in the City of Galena: Illinois, From the Organization of Strangers Union Lodge, 1826, 1826 to July 1874, 5874, and by-Laws of Miners Lodge No; 273, A. F., And Jo Daviess Chapter, No; 51, R. A. M's;, Ely S. Parker Council No; 6, R. S. E., And S. M's; Galena Commandery No; 40, K The importance of compiling the history of Masonry in Galena, that the names of our early Masonic workers may be preserved to the Craft, has often been suggested by the members of Miners' Lodge No. 273. No more fitting time has presented itself than the present, when new by-laws were to be published by at least three of the four Masonic bodies in this city, and by combining all the codes in one book, the expense of a separate publication is avoided, and the work bound in a form which will insure its preservation. The value of such a record cannot be too highly estimated, embracing as it does, the names of many of the earliest and most prominent settlers of the mining regions, active alike in Masonry as they were in all the public measures of the day. The difficulties attending the writing of this history will be better understood when it is known that the first Lodge - "Strangers' Union" - was organized before the arrival of the U.S. Agent, Capt. Martin Thomas, who came to take charge of the mineral lands on behalf of the Government and to lay out the "village" of Galena, two years before the publication of the first newspaper in this the Northwest. Book General John A Rawlins

Download or read book General John A Rawlins written by Allen J. Ottens and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one succeeds alone, and Ulysses S. Grant was no exception. From the earliest days of the Civil War to the heights of Grant's power in the White House, John A. Rawlins was ever at Grant's side. Yet Rawlins's role in Grant's career is often overlooked, and he barely received mention in Grant's own two-volume Memoirs. General John A. Rawlins: No Ordinary Man by Allen J. Ottens is the first major biography of Rawlins in over a century and traces his rise to assistant adjutant general and ultimately Grant's secretary of war. Ottens presents the portrait of a man who teamed with Grant, who submerged his needs and ambition in the service of Grant, and who at times served as the doubter who questioned whether Grant possessed the background to tackle the great responsibilities of the job. Rawlins played a pivotal role in Grant's relatively small staff, acting as administrator, counselor, and defender of Grant's burgeoning popularity. Rawlins qualifies as a true patriot, a man devoted to the Union and devoted to Grant. His is the story of a man who persevered in wartime and during the tumultuous years of Reconstruction and who, despite a ravaging disease that would cut short his blossoming career, grew to become a proponent of the personal and citizenship rights of those formerly enslaved. General John A. Rawlins will prove to be a fascinating and essential read for all who have an interest in leadership, the Civil War, or Ulysses S. Grant.

Download or read book Civil War High Commands written by John Eicher and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on nearly five decades of research, this magisterial work is a biographical register and analysis of the people who most directly influenced the course of the Civil War, its high commanders. Numbering 3,396, they include the presidents and their cabinet members, state governors, general officers of the Union and Confederate armies (regular, provisional, volunteers, and militia), and admirals and commodores of the two navies. Civil War High Commands will become a cornerstone reference work on these personalities and the meaning of their commands, and on the Civil War itself. Errors of fact and interpretation concerning the high commanders are legion in the Civil War literature, in reference works as well as in narrative accounts. The present work brings together for the first time in one volume the most reliable facts available, drawn from more than 1,000 sources and including the most recent research. The biographical entries include complete names, birthplaces, important relatives, education, vocations, publications, military grades, wartime assignments, wounds, captures, exchanges, paroles, honors, and place of death and interment. In addition to its main component, the biographies, the volume also includes a number of essays, tables, and synopses designed to clarify previously obscure matters such as the definition of grades and ranks; the difference between commissions in regular, provisional, volunteer, and militia services; the chronology of military laws and executive decisions before, during, and after the war; and the geographical breakdown of command structures. The book is illustrated with 84 new diagrams of all the insignias used throughout the war and with 129 portraits of the most important high commanders.
