Book Fort Armstrong Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fort Armstrong Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Maria Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Armstrong It is a fact worthy of mention that only a short time prior to the events which precipitated the final contest, six thousand dollars paid to the disaffected fragments of the Sacs and Foxes would have effected the substantial results achieved by the war, and quieted all complaints. The Government refused to compromise, and waged a war of extermination during which the flag of truce, held sacred by all the civilized nations of the world, was twice fired upon. The war cost two million dollars. The treaty made by General Scott with the Indians at the con elusion of the war terminated at last the difficulties and also added six million acres west of the Mississippi (afterwards comprised in the State of Iowa) known as the Black Hawk Purchase, to the territory of the United States. Owing to the fact that an epidemic of cholera was raging among General Scott's troops detained at Fort Armstrong, all the deliberations connected with this important treaty were conducted in a tent on the west bank of the river. The ground occupied was the site upon which was afterward built the first house erected in the city of Davenport. Black Hawk and a few of his adherents were held as hostages, and with a view of impressing them with the vastness of the country, the numerical strength and greatness of the people, they were taken to Washington and from there through many of the large cities of the East. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Recovery: An Historical Sketch Depicting Its Role in the History of the Old Northwest Congress appropriated thirty-seven thousand dollars for equip ping the army for this expedition, which had for its object the erection of a military post at the junction of the St. Marys and St. Joseph rivers (now the site of Fort Wayne, Indiana) and posts of communication connecting with Fort Washington. In the quarter-master's department things progressed slowly. Tents, pack-saddles, camp-kettles, knapsacks and cartridge boxes were all deficient in quantity and quality; powder was poor or damaged; accoutrements were out of repair; and no tools were available. Of 675 stands of arms at Fort Washington, very few were in order, and with two traveling forges there were no anvils. General Butler was employed to obtain recruits, and as they appeared in Fort Washington, after long periods of detention at Philadelphia and prolonged travel on' the river, a new source of trouble arose from the intemperance indulged in by the recruits. To remove them from temptation, St. Clair placed 2000 of them at Ludlow's Station, six miles. From Fort Washington. They came principally from the states of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Early Days at Fort Snelling Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Days at Fort Snelling Classic Reprint written by Edward Duffield Neill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days at Fort Snelling In 1823, news was brought by the traders that two white children were with a party of Sioux, on the St. Peter's. It appeared from what they could learn, that a family from Red River - Selkirk's settlement - had been on their way to the fort, when a war party of Sioux met them, murdered the parents and an infant, and made the boys prisoners. Col. Snelling sent an officer with a party of soldiers to rescue the children. After some delay in the ransom, they were finally brought. An old squaw, who had the youngest, was very unwilling to give him up, and indeed the child did not wish to leave her. The oldest, about eight years old, said his name was john tully, and his brother, five years old, abraham. His mother had an infant, but he saw the Indians dash its brains out against a tree, then killed his father and mother. Because he cried they took him by his hair, and cut a small piece from his head, which was a running sore when he was re-taken. Col. Snellincr took john into his family, Major clark the other, but he was afterwards sent to an orphan asylum in New York. The eldest died of lockjaw, occasioned by a cut in the ankle while using an axe. During this year, the commandant was visited by Gen scott and suit, and the fort was completed. Heretofore it had been called Fort St. Anthony, but Gen. Scott issued an order giving it the name of Fort Snelling. He expressed his approbation of the construction and site of the fort, etc., Spent a week with his friends, and visited the Falls and a chain of lakes where they were used to amuse themselves fishing, and where the water was so cleat they could see the fish playing about the hook. One of the lakes Mrs. Snelling named Scott Lake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Gibson: A Brief History Frequent reports came to Fort Gibson of the hostilities of the Plains Indians against the people of Texas, along with rumors that the Mexicans were aiding and abetting them. Re quests were made for the authorities at Fort Gibson to aid in making peace with these Indians on both sides of the Red River. The Secretary of War. Directed this to be done and in March, 1843, Cherokee Agent Pierce Butler left the post, and with an escort attended a council on_ Tawakoni Creek in Texas, where, however, nothing definite was accomplished. Another effort was made in the fall when Butler was accom ponied by eighty men commanded by Colonel Harney. Again the Indians were elusive and non-committal. The next summer in 1844, another effort was made when Captain Nathan Boone, with a company of the First Dragoons, left the past September 25 and went to the rendezvous in Texas; but the Indians had left when Boone arrived and he returned to Fort Gibson unsuccessful, after an absence of six weeks. A fourth attempt was made when in January, 1846, Governor Butler departed from Fort Gibson with a large company of civilian hunters and adventurers and representatives of the Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Seminole tribes. Butler was finally successful, and on May 15, 1846, at Council Springs, Texas, negotiated a treaty of peace with the Comanche, Anadarko, Caddo, Wichita, Waco, and other western tribes that brought a sense of security to the frontier settlers of Texas.
