C: A History The ensuing pages might well be called the First Addition to the comprehensive and exhaustive history of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, N. C., as compiled in 1948 by the late Hugh A. Query, an elder and clerk of the session. This addition endeavors to depict the major work of the congrega tion between that period and midyear of 1961. Space limitations, naturally, limit many details of the devoted and unselfish work done by various members of the congregation, but major accomplishments have been outlined in an effort to bring before the congregation outstanding accomplishments of the past dozen or more years. Personal references have been made in a few cases primarily as examples of the services rendered throughout the years and of the sted fast devotion to the church and its causes by families now represented by the third, and in some cases, fourth generations. To all who have labored faithfully and in a consecrated manner, the church is deeply indebted and to them is due much credit for the successful activities throughout the years. The compilation of this record was made primarily by Charles F. Daniel, an elder in the church and member since 1944, at the request of the Memorials committee. Mr. Daniel has done extensive research of church records, has made lots of personal interviews, and reminiscences have also had a part in this writing. The Memorials committee hereby expresses its deep gratitude to Mr. Daniel for his faithful and zealous efforts in making possible this first addition to the Church's history. The committee extends its thanks also to all others who have cooperated generously and hopes that this record will be an inspiration to greater achievements in the work of the church. As the state attempted to reorganize its governmental structure, the Presbyterian Synod of North Carolina was going about the business of reviving the Lord's work. Recognizing the temper of the times the synod focused its attention upon Christian families, calling upon them to look to their children and to teach them the fear of God and obedience to lawful authority. Following up on its appeal to families, synod next turned its attention to all people, calling them to prayer and to-arise and rebuild the waste places, and urging them to the support of evangelists and missionaries. Although it was synod that was pricking the consciences of North Carolina Presbyterians, it was on the level of presbytery that the responsibility for mission and evangelization was directed. The number of communion services was increased fro-m quarterly to bimonthly celebrations. A Junior Choir was organized and a lending library begun for young maple and adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enter Into His Gates: History of the First Presbyterian Church, Maxton, North Carolina, 1858 When the large immigration of 1746 began, the Carolina back-country was largely uninhabited and undeveloped. The sea-coast towns of Wilmington and Charleston were growing rapidly. It was to these ports that the boats of the Highlanders came. Most of the newcomers desired to move inland because of their agricultural interests and the availability of land. Traditionally clannish, the settlers pushed up the Cape Fear to find their kinsmen who had preceded them. A settlement at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear grew into the town of Campbellton, today the city of Fayetteville. Expanding out from this central location, the Highlanders moved into all of southeastern North Carolina. The expansion was slow and difficult, for the rivers had to be forded, the swamps were deep and thick, and sickness and wild animals were foes to be reckoned with. How different from the beauty of Scotland was this unexplored, swampy land! To plow their fields and look forward to the next day took faith and courage. Several hundred of the Highlanders made their way south of Campbell town, or Cross Creek as it became known, into the Rockfish Creek area, then gradually into the denser aiea on each side of the Raft Swamp, Drowning Creek, and the Lumbee River. As the Highlanders pushed into the territory of present-day Robeson County, they found some English settlers located in the southern section, and some isolated but friendly Indians located along the banks of the Lumbee. It was far from encouraging country. There were no roads worthy of the name until about 1800. There was not an official post office in the area until after 1800. The country was a wilderness.
