Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discovery and Exploration of the Mississippi Valley Academy of History, Madrid, being the only American who has ever received this honor. Having a natural taste for linguistics, and finding as he pur sued his studies some knowledge of the Indian languages requisite he began investigating their structure, relationship, grammar, and vocabulary. His researches having brought together a num ber of manuscripts, chie y by early missionaries, and regretting the general indifference among American scholars for such studies, he published in 1860 the first of a series in fifteen volumes of grammars and dictionaries of Indian languages, entitled Library of American Linguistics, several of which he edited and pre pared. No individual or society has ever yet done so much to save from oblivion the languages spoken by the aboriginal inhabi tants of this country. The articles on Indian tribes in Apple ton's Cyclopaedia are all from the pen of Dr. Shea. In 1857 he printed the first of a series, twenty-six little vol umes, from early manuscripts, chie y relating to the missions. In these he adopted the type, Initial letters, head-lines, and orna ments used by Cramoisy, King's printer at Paris, who published the Jesuit Relations. These volumes went mostly to amateurs here and in Europe, and are highly prized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley written by Ephraim G. Squier and published by Smithsonian Books. This book was released on 1998 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1848 as the first major work in the nascent discipline as well as the first publication of the newly established Smithsonian Institution, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley remains today not only a key document in the history of American archaeology but also the primary source of information on hundreds of mounds and earthworks in the eastern United States, most of which have now vanished. Despite adhering to the popular assumption that the moundbuilders could not have been the ancestors of the supposedly savage Native American groups still living in the region, the authors set high standards for their time. Their work provides insight into some of the conceptual, methodological, and substantive issues that archaeologists still confront. Long out of print, this 150th anniversary edition includes David J. Meltzer's lively introduction, which describes the controversies surrounding the book’s original publication, from a bitter, decades-long feud between Squier and Davis to widespread debates about the links between race, religion, and human origins. Complete with a new index and bibliography, and illustrated with the original maps, plates, and engravings, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley provides a new generation with a first-hand view of this pioneer era in American archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discovery and Exploration of the Mississippi Valley: With the Original Narratives of Marquette, Allouez, Membre, Hennepin, and Anastase Douay It has long been a desideratum to have in English the early narratives of the discovery and exploration of the Mississippi. Marquette's map and voyage have indeed appeared, but the narrative varies in no small degree from the authentic manuscript, and the map is not at all a copy of that still preserved, as it came from the hand of the great explorer. These published from original manuscripts, and accompanied by the narratives of the missionaries in La Salle's expedition, are now first presented in an accessible shape, and complete the annals of the exploration. The life of Marquette, and the history of the exploration itself, are the result of many years study of the early Spanish and French authorities, both printed and manuscript, some of which have never before been consulted. Besides my own researches, I have been aided by those of the President of St. Mary's College, and of the Hon. James Viger, of Montreal, and I trust that the volume will be found to be as faithful as the subject is interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French in the Mississippi Valley and Spanish Explorations and Colonization: Excerpt From V. 2 of a Popular History of the United States At the revolution of 1688, he fell under serious suspicion of aiding in the plots for the return of James II. Once he was arrested and brought before the Lords of Council, and, at his own request, was taken before the King. A letter had been written him by James, and when examined in regard to it, he could not, he said, prevent him from writing to him but if that brought him under a suspicion of plotting for a restoration, it did not compel him to violate his duty to the state. The King seemed satisfied with his defence, and he was not again molested. It did not seem to him proper, however, to leave the kingdom while under such suspicion, and he remained in England.
