Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museums of Education: Their History and Use The educational museum, or museum of education, of which this study treats, is one of these specialized museums, which includes collections solely of Objects related to education and which is administered primarily to be of service to persons engaged in education. Such museums first appeared about half a century ago, and probably a hundred or more of them have been organized in various parts of the world. Recently, renewed interest has been shown in the educational museum in this coun try, as, for example, in the movement to establish such museums in the cities of St. Louis and New York, and in certain states, and in the tendency to form collections of similar material in certain American universities. An attempt to bring together experience regarding these museums seems therefore timely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching History with Museums provides an introduction and overview of the rich pedagogical power of museums. In this comprehensive textbook, the authors show how museums offer a sophisticated understanding of the past and develop habits of mind in ways that are not easily duplicated in the classroom. Using engaging cases to illustrate accomplished history teaching through museum visits, this text provides pre- and in-service teachers, teacher educators, and museum educators with ideas for successful visits to artifact and display-based museums, historic forts, living history museums, memorials, monuments, and other heritage sites. Each case is constructed to be adapted and tailored in ways that will be applicable to any classroom and encourage students to think deeply about museums as historical accounts and interpretations to be examined, questioned, and discussed.

Book excerpt: Museums as educational institutions can provide social, aesthetic, and historical meaning to our lives. Bringing schoolchildren to museums on field trips is a traditional way of introducing them to the museum's collections. This book describes a program developed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to bring museum collections to classrooms through their teachers. It illustrates how an idea took shape, the program that emerged and the conclusions drawn, and might serve to spark other ideas for outreach collaborations between museums and schools. "I came away with a new appreciation for the history of civilization. I kept thinking why on earth not teach history through art!" - Brenda Johnson, teacher

Book The Museums and Collections of Higher Education

Download or read book The Museums and Collections of Higher Education written by Andrew Simpson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Museums and Collections of Higher Education provides an analysis of the historic connections between materiality and higher education, developed through diverse examples of global practice. Outlining the different value propositions that museums and collections bring to higher education, the historic link between objects, evidence and academic knowledge is examined with reference to the origin point of both types of organisation. Museums and collections bring institutional reflection, cross-disciplinary bridges, digital extension options and participatory potential. Given the two primary sources of text and object, a singular source type predisposes a knowledge system to epistemic stasis, whereas mixed sources develop the potential for epistemic disruption and possible change. Museums and collections, therefore, are essential in the academies of higher learning. With the many challenges confronting humanity, it is argued that connecting intellect with social action for societal change through university museums should be a contemporary manifestation of the social contract of universities. Much has been written about museums and universities, but there is little about university museums and collections. This book will interest museum scholars and practitioners especially those unaware that university museums are at the forefront of museological creativity. It will also be of interest to academics and the growing number of leaders and managers in the modern university.
