Book History of Education in Vermont Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Education in Vermont Classic Reprint written by George Gary Bush and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Education in Vermont For years no statistics were gathered showing the number of school Children, their average attendance, and the aggregate expense of sus taining the schools, no institutes nor general meetings were held, and no reports made by direction Of law. The only faithful and determined friends of the common schools were said to be mainly clergymen of different denominations. In 1856 a law was passed providing for a board of education, chosen annually by the legislature and consisting of five members, with powers substantially the same as those granted in 1827 to the board of commissioners, except that the latter board was authorized to appoint a secretary. This law left the act Of November 15, 1847, materially unchanged. The duties discharged by the secretary from that-time until 187 4 were the same as have since been performed by the State superintendent of schools. The first to be chosen to the office of secretary was the Hon. J. S. Adams, who in 1856 entered upon the performance Of the duties which in the years to follow he proved himself so well fitted to discharge. Book A Room for Learning

Download or read book A Room for Learning written by Tal Birdsey and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sometimes I have thought that this school is like the only place where the lilies are considered at all..." In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie Wiesel's "Night", with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power.

Download or read book A Study of Secondary Education in Vermont Classic Reprint written by Raymond McFarland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Secondary Education in Vermont While two-thirds of the schools have satisfactory grounds, also two-thirds of the buildings are poorly sup plied with light through inadequate window space. Teach ers do not realize their responsibility in maintaining the best possible conditions for lighting and ventilating rooms. Too often the shades are left where they happen to be, with no consideration for the bright or dull day. Usually two thirds of the light comes through the upper half of the window. Many cases of severe eye strain could be avoid cd by raising the shades to the top of the windows, or, what is better, by having shades that may be adjusted from the middle of the Window. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vermont School Report: Made by the State Superintendent of Edugation, to the General Assembly, October, 1898 That the public schools of Vermont have been greatly improved by the introduction of the town system is a fact; it is another fact that they can still be improved in afar greater degree. By the introduction of the town system many causes of local dis ruption have been removed; still too many community disturbances occur because there is no near authoritative official to whom the people can confidently appeal.
