In the three decades following 1947, the state of Assam underwent massive political turmoil, geographical instability, and social and demographic upheaval, among others. Book excerpt: This book explores the making of colonial Northeast India and offers a new perspective to the study of the Assamese identity in the nineteenth century as a distinctly nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon, not confined to linguistic parameters alone. It studies crucial markers of the self — history, customs, food, dress, new religious beliefs — and symbols considered desirable by the provincial middle class and the way these fitted in with the latter’s nationalist subjectivities in the face of an emphatic Bengali cultural nationalism. The author shows how colonialism was intrinsically linked to the assertion of middle class intelligentsia in the region and was instrumental in eroding the essential malleability of societal processes nurtured by the Ahom state. Rich with fresh research data, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of history, political science, area studies, and to anyone interested in understanding Northeast India.

Book DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION IN HYDERABAD KARNATAKA REGION

Download or read book DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION IN HYDERABAD KARNATAKA REGION written by Dr. Shridhar Boranna and published by Laxmi Book Publication. This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important ingredients of socio-economic development that has attracted the attention of the planners, policy makers and leaders in the recent past is education. It is an established fact that education is an important catalyst of socio-economic transformation. In the advanced industrial societies of the world, education is provided by the states as a matter of right to all citizens. 1 The role of education was recognised as vital in arousing an awakening among the Indian masses even in the pre-independence era. Its contribution in breaking the shackles of slavery cannot be undermined as far as it helped in the growth of an enlightened intelligentsia, which carried forward not only the movement for independence but also a relentless struggle for socio economic reforms. After independence our planners, policy makers, and leaders placed immense faith in education as an important means of socio-economic transformation and modernization. Since the attainment of independence in 1947 Central and State governments of India very rightly embarked on a crusade against ignorance by expanding the facilities for education at all levels.2 The number of schools and of students attending them began to increase by leaps and bounds all over the country. There is no denying the fact that India has made tremendous progress in the field of education especially after independence. But it may be mentioned here that our present education system is not without maladies and inadequacies.

Download or read book Beyond Macaulay written by Parimala V. Rao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Macaulay provides a radical and comprehensive history of Indian education in the early colonial era — from the establishment of the Calcutta Madrasa in 1780 until the end of the East India Company’s rule and the beginning of the administration by the crown in 1860. The book challenges the conventional theory that the British administration imposed English language and modern education on Indians. Based on rich archival evidence, it critically explores data on 16,000 indigenous schools and shows that indigenous education was not oral, informal, and Brahmin-centric but written, formal, and egalitarian. The author highlights the educational policies of the colonial state and the way it actively opposed the introduction of modern education and privileged Brahmins. By including hitherto unused 41 Educational Minutes of Macaulay, the volume examines his educational ideas, and analyses why the colonial state closed down every school established by him. It also contrasts the educational ideas of the British elites and the Orientalists with dissenting Scottish voices. The book discusses post-Macaulayan educational policies and the Wood’s Despatch of 1854 as well as educational institutions during the revolt of 1857. It covers indigenous education in Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and modern Indian vernaculars, the impact of the colonial policies on these schools, and traces the history of education in Bengal, North India, and Madras and Bombay Presidencies, as also the role of caste and religion in society. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of education, history of education, Indian history, South Asian history, colonial history, sociology, political history and political science.
