Coburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dracut, Massachusetts, Called by the Indians Augumtoocooke and Before Incorporation, the Wildernesse North of the Merrimac: First Permanment Settlement in 1669 and Incorporated as a Town in 1701 HE history OF dracut is now presented to the public in accordance with the request of the citizens of the town for a history which would embody in one volume the various subjects which relate to its existence. I make no claim to any Special knowledge of events or superior ability to place them upon record. No writer of a work of this nature can prepare the material from a personal knowledge of the facts, for the participants have, with a few exceptions, gone To the pale realms of shade, where each must take his chamber in the silent halls of death, and even their existence has been forgotten. Facts and information have been gathered from different sources. The records of the town have been carefully studied, though as the town clerks of the earlier years did not realize the need of a full account of the transactions of the town, it has been difficult to record the proceedings of those Years. No record of the first ten years of the town's existence has been preserved, and whatever events of that period are here recorded have been obtained from other sources. Download or read book Dracut written by John Pendergast and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dracut, a typical New England town with a brilliant but almost forgotten past, was founded in 1701, or 1702 according to the modern Gregorian calendar. A Yankee tradition grew up there side by side with the cultural heritage of many immigrant groups, and this early diversity distinguished the community from some of its neighbors. Dracut's first landowner was John Webb, whose property was sold in the seventeenth century to the town's first resident, Edward Coburn. Dracut men served valiantly in the Revolutionary War, and many residents figured prominently in the fields of politics and business. This marvelous new photographic history of Dracut chronicles the contributions of many and puts into context the role of the town in the history of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1669 as a small farming village on the banks of the Merrimack River, Dracuts early settlers made their mark during the American Revolution. From French nobleman Louis Ansart, who became an American citizen and settled in the area, to Dracuts own Joseph Bradley Varnum, the town played a pivotal role in the founding of the nation. More recently, Dracut continues to be the home of modern-day patriots such as Michael Monahan, who left college to serve in the Vietnam War, and Capt. John Ogonowski, who gave his life on September 11, 2001. Dracut has been home to numerous other local legendsDr. Christos Daoulas was the longest-serving Massachusetts school superintendent, and Dennis Piendak oversaw incredible growth and expansion during his 28 years as town manager. Dracut was also home to the indomitable Polly Urquhart, whose name now graces the corner where her store once stood; Rev. Larry Zimmerman, the pastor of the Old Yellow Meeting House for 33 years; and Edmund Murphy, the dean of Massachusetts high school football coaches. These are a few of the many amazing people who came from a town that was once known as simply the wildernesse north of the Merrimac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dracut's diverse landscape, ranging from pastoral fields to vestiges of former textile mills, alludes to a history just as diverse, which can be traced back to 1665. The town was the first permanent Massachusetts settlement north of the Merrimack River; however, Dracut Revisited explores more closely the town's recent 20th-century history. Throughout the years, Dracut citizens have been industry employees at places such as Beaver Brook Mills and the Dracut Navy Yard. The town had the region's premier resort at Lake Mascuppic, the Lakeview Ballroom. It has also been home to numerous dairy farms, including Shaw Farm, which celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2008 and is one of a handful of active dairy farms that remain in the state. Dracut has a long record of serving in the nation's conflicts, from the American Revolution to September 11, 2001. Dracut has made great sacrifices and has been proud to honor the sacrifices of its citizens.
