Attention was especially called to the fact that Downingtown, although an ancient settlement and with an honorable record, had no published history, and propos ing that the semi - centennial should be marked by the preparation and publication of a town history. The article was received with marked approbation by many prominent citizens. The Council appointed a committee on the subject, with Mr. Isaac Y. Ash as chairman, and after deliberation it was decided to submit the question of the celebration to a called meeting of representative citizens, and this meeting was duly called, and was held in the rooms of the Alert Fire Company on the evening of March 11, 1909. The assemblage was composed of representatives duly appoivted from the churches, benevolent and patriotic organiza tions and the industrial, financial and other interests of the com munity, and was largely attended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individual and the Community: An Address Before the Chester County Historical Society West Chester, Pa It was with especial pleasure that I accepted the invitation of the Chester County Historical Society to come here as your guest to-day. For, upwards of two hundred years ago, my lineal ancestor, Thomas Wickersham, a Quaker farmer, came from England and settled in this county, within a few miles of this spot. I have in my possession a copy of the certificate given to him by the monthly meeting of Friends at Horsham, Sussex County, England, which throws an interesting light on the times in which he lived, and furnishes me with a text for the few remarks which I shall make. This certificate was issued by the monthly meeting held at Horsham, in the County of Sussex, the rith of the seventh month of the year 1700. It is ad dressed: To all our faithful friends and brethren in Pennsylvania unto whom this may come, in the covenant of life, in the fellowship of the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ and in unity of the one eternal spirit of our God. Book Three Scientists of Chester County Classic Reprint

Download or read book Three Scientists of Chester County Classic Reprint written by Henry Pleasants Jr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Scientists of Chester County When the final story of forest conservation comes to be told, amongst the valuable sources of material, I think, will be found these booklets. They portray intimately the lives of three men through whose work, though of course not through theirs alone, the great idea developed. Humphry Marshall collected trees when trees, over much of the settled part of the state were almost a menace to the settlers. William Darlington made men and women conscious of the interest and beauty of the simple plants of forest, pasture and meadow. Joseph Rothrock fought the good fight, and won the battle for the care, restoration and enjoyment of the forests of this Forest Land of Penn. It is well that a sympathetic lover of the woods, a reverent and loving student of the past, with the power to write clearly and with distinguished charm, should have been willing to gather the story of these men, for the Chester County Historical Society.
