This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Delaware County, Iowa, and Its People, Vol. 1 A century ago all that part of the great and beautiful State of Iowa, of which the County of Delaware is a part, was practically terra incognita, a vast wilderness, given over by the Almighty to wild beasts, birds Of the air and their masters, the Indians, who roamed the plains and forests at will, claiming and securing an existence from the bounteous hand of Nature. Here the deer, buffalo and other fur bearing animals found a habitat and the main streams gave generously Of the palatable fish. The red man had no care for the morrow. NO thought came to him that his possessions would ever be disturbed by the pale face. SO he continued his dreams. The hunt was his daily avocation, broken in upon at intervals by a set-to with a hostile tribe of aborigines, that was always cruel and bloody in its results and added spoils to the victor and captives for torture. He knew not of the future and cared less. But the time was coming, was upon him, when he was called upon to make way for a stronger and a progressive race of men; when the fair land that was his birthright and his hunting grounds, resplendent with the gorgeous flower and emerald sod, must yield to the husbandman. The time had come for the buffalo, deer and elk to seek pastures new, that the alluvial soil might be turned to the sun and fed with grain, to yield in their seasons the richest of harvests. It is hard for the present generation to realize the rapid pace of civilization on the western continent in the past one hundred years; and when one confines his attention to the advancement Of the State of Iowa in the past seventy-five years, his amazement is all the more intense. Evidences of progress are on every hand as one wends one 's way across the beautiful state. Manufacturing plants are springing up hither and yon; magnificent edifices for religious worship point their spires heavenward; schoolhouses, colleges and other places Of learning and instruction make the state stand out prominently among her sisters of this great republic. Villages are growing into towns and towns are taking on the dignity of a city government, until today Iowa is noted throughout the Union for the number, beauty and thrift of her towns and cities. The commonwealth is cobwebbed with her telegraph, telephone and railroad lines and all these things above mentioned have been made possible by the thrift, determination and high character of the people who claim citizenship within her borders. This was not i Government coin, as it did not contain any alloy. It was only guaranteed to he so many fine ounces. The piece was octagonal in shape and was called by our people a "slug."' Some of those slugs were brought home by the miners. FINANCIAL CRASH OF 1857 AND WILD CAT MONEY But alas! Our prosperity, after flourishing a few years, came to a sudden halt. The great financial crisis of 1857 stopped all progress. It seemed the trold and silver had taken wings and flown away. Our country was flooded with worthless paper currency, issued by private banks that had sprung up like..Jonah's gourd. All over the then western states private banking, then not restricted by law. issued an unlimited quantity of paper money. It was brought from the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, scattered over Iowa with no security behind it and no law by which the guilty parties could be punished. So that, we found ourselves stranded and it was quite a task to get hold of gold or silver to pay taxes, which had to be paid in coin of the country. All articles of manufacture remained unsold. Products of the soil were disposed of for less than nothing or were not sold at all. All manner of business came to a standstill. Little improvement was made within the state. It was about all a man could do to make a living and hold on to what he had. Up until the Government issued currency to carry on the war of the great rebellion, prices remained very low. Just before the close of the war. in 1864 and 1865, prices of everything...

Book A History of Delaware County Pennsylvania and Its People Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Delaware County Pennsylvania and Its People Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John W. Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Its People, Vol. 1 It was the consensus of opinion of many native residents of Delaware county. Pennsylvania, - men deeply interested in its history and proud of the impress its people have ever made upon the character of the State and Nation that the time had come when a comprehensive history of this remarkable region would prove an invaluable contribution to the literature not only of the county itself, but of the commonwealth, and of the country at large. With this encouragement, and the assistance of unusually well informed antiquarians and annalists, the publishers undertook the present work, "A History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Its People." This includes a comprehensive resume of the history of the county, from its colonization down to the present day. The narrative down to 1862 is based upon the elaborate history of Dr. George Smith, published in that year. While not at all slighting the periods covered by that accomplished historian, due attention has been given in the present work, to the marvelous development of the county during the half century which has passed away since the appearance of his publication. In each generation, and at every stage of progress, the people of Delaware county have had the services of men of the loftiest character and highest capability - in the arts of peace, in statesmanship, in affairs, and in letters. Nor have their accomplishments been bounded by their native field. Crossing the mountains, her sons have pushed their way into the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi, and to the Far West, building up new communities, creating new commonwealths, planting, wherever they went, the institutions of religion and education, leading into channels of thrift and enterprise all who gathered about them or into whose midst they came, and proving a power for ideal citizenship and good government. The narrative, at once heroic and pathetic, is not only a noble heritage, but an inspiration to those of the present and of the future, giving emphasis to the pregnant words of Martineau: "To have had forefathers renowned for honorable deeds, to belong by nature to those who have bravely borne their part in life, and refreshed the world with mighty thoughts and healthy admiration, is a privilege which it were mean and self-willed to despise. It is as a security given for us of old, which it were falsehearted not to redeem; and in virtues bred of a noble stock, mellowed as they are by reverence, there is often a grace and ripeness wanting to self-made and brand-new excellence. Of like value to a people are heroic traditions, giving them a determinate character to sustain among the tribes of men, making them familiar with images of great and strenuous life, and kindling them with faith in glorious possibilities." History proper, of necessity, is a narrative of what has been accomplished by people in the mass, and can take little note of individuals. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Twentieth Century History of Delaware County, Indiana, Vol. 2 John C. Johnson. For twenty years the late John C. Johnson was a resident of Muncie, to the progress of which he was a large contributor. He came to the city in 1884 and became an interested partner in the lumber and saw-milling business of the firm of A. L. Johnson 81 Company, at the same time manifesting a keen interest in public affairs. In reviewing the career of this successful business man and prominent citizen, as he was, we note that he was a native of the state of New York, born on the lt of May, 1843, in Albany county, his parents being Henry I. And Eliza (ferguson) Johnson, who were also natives of the Empire State. The father, who was an agriculturist, resided in New York until 1864, when he moved to Ashtabula, Ohio, and in 1881 came with his family to Muncie, Indiana. When the subject of this review was seven years of age his parents removed from Albany county, New York, to Herkimer county, that state, where he received a fair common-school education. At the age of seventeen years he enlisted in the Union Army, Company K, Forty-fourth New York, known as the Ellsworth Avengers, and served one year. On account of a wound received at the battle of Hanover Court House Mr. Johnson was sent first to Albany, New York, and from there to Lexington Avenue Hospital, in New York city, from which he was discharged after recovery. Entering the quartermaster's department at City Point, Virginia, under Captain C. E. Jones, he remained in that capacity until the close of the war. He had laid aside school books to render service in defense of the Union, and now having returned from the battle front with an honorable discharge he again entered the school room, for two years attending an academy for boys at Albany, New York, and then took a course at Bryant 81 Stratton's Commercial College. For some fifteen years thereafter he was in the employ of H. W. Sage Company and others of Albany, his occupation being that of a clerk and bookkeeper. During that time he Obtained a thorough knowledge of the lumber business in all its departments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
