Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cumberland, (Maryland) From the Time of the Indian Town, Caiuctucuc, in 1728, Up to the Present Day: Embracing an Account of Washington's First Campaign, and Battle of Fort Necessity, Together With a History of Braddock's Expedition, &C., &C., &C Some of the ideas originally entertained as to the s00pe of this work have been, of necessity, abandoned. Of these, I may mention the purpose of recording the family history of the first, or earlier, settlers of the town. Satisfactory data as to but few of these families can now be obtained, despite most strenuous efforts made in that direction. Consequently this purpose could not be carried out without laying the author open to the charge of invidious discrimination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operating under an outmoded system of urban development and faced by the vicissitudes of the Civil War and Reconstruction, southerners in the nineteenth century built a network of cities that met the needs of their society. In this pioneering exploration of that intricate story, Lawrence H. Larsen shows that in the antebellum period, southern entrepreneurs built cities in layers to facilitate the movement of cotton. First came the colonial cities, followed by those of the piedmont, the New West, the Gulf Coast, and the interior. By the Civil War, cotton could move by a combination of road, rail, and river through a network of cities—for example, from Jackson to Memphis to New Orleans to Europe. In the Gilded Age, building on past practices, the South continued to make urban gains. Men like Henry Grady of Atlanta and Henry Watterson of Louisville used broader regional objectives to promote their own cities. Grady successfully sold Atlanta, one of the most southern of cities demographically, as a city with a northern outlook; Watterson tied Louisville to national goals in railroad building. The New South movement did not succeed in bringing the region to parity with the rest of the nation, yet the South continued to rise along older lines. By 1900, far from being a failure in terms of the general course of American development, the South had created an urban system suited to its needs, while avoiding the promotional frenzy that characterized the building of cities in the North. Based upon federal and local sources, this book will become the standard work on nineteenth-century southern urbanization, a subject too long unexplored.

Book The Shawnee Indians

Download or read book The Shawnee Indians written by Randolph Noe and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of years of painstaking research, this outstanding compilation reflects the wealth of material available on the Shawnee, from contact through the 20th century. The historical introduction provides a succinct but comprehensive narrative of Shawnee history. The bibliography itself is arranged in three broad subject areas. The first covers general history and affairs, anthropology, and linguistics; the second moves through history with the Shawnee, providing easy access to materials that document and analyze each period of their history; and the third references a plethora of primary documents-judicial, administrative, and Congressional material not generally found in existing guides. This latter section lends a particular strength to the work with its annotations of the Annual Reports of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs, which give unparalleled views of Shawnee life in the 19th century. Although intended primarily as a guide to the literature, the entries are generous in scope and description and often contain quotations from the primary sources. Intended for historians, anthropologists, researchers, and students, both graduate and undergraduate.
