Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Hollis, New Hampshire, From Its First Settlement to the Year 1879: With Many Biographical Sketches of Its Early Settlers, Their Descendants, and Other Residents As this book will be found to contain very many short biograph ical personal sketches, it is hoped that it will not be looked upon as a matter Of unpardonable egotism Should it be introduced to the charitable reader with the like brief sketch of itself. Though a native of Hollis, the home of an honored ancestry for a hundred years and more, and my own, in childhood and youth, it has not been so for the last fifty years and more. It was my fortune to begin and spend a busy professional life of between thirty and forty years in a distant western State. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unwritten History of the New Hampshire Historical Society Building I have been impressed since the dedication of the New Hampshire Historical Society Building that there still remained a historical residuum worthy to be noticed and remembered. By this I mean a chapter in our annals that has never been written. While the history of the Society, from its foundation nearly a century ago down to the opening of our beautiful building, has been written and preserved for all time, and the description of the building and its charms and richness similarly treated, there seemed to be wanting something to complete the narrative. And that something I denominate a historical residuum. In the objective point of view nothing perhaps has been left unwritten, but subjectively the fact is otherwise. Download or read book History of the Town of Cornish New Hampshire Vol 1 written by William Henry Child and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, Vol. 1: With Genealogical Record, 1763-1910 A powerful source Of inspiration is found in the history of those ancestors whose achievements have been for the better ment Of the world. There is an intellectual and moral power in such an ancestry which elevates the character and improves the heart. The history of a town is scarcely more than the collective history Of the families composing the town. The writer has felt it his duty to collect as much as possible, realizing that it is a duty we owe both to the living and the dead, to the future as well as the present, that these memorials of the past. And present be preserved. It does not seem right that the memory of the dead should perish, that they who have done and suffered so much for their posterity should be forgotten on the earth. It. Is true that many do not highly appreciate researches Of this nature. This lack of interest arises generally from too intense a contact of the mind with the present, excluding almost wholly the influences Of the past and even of the future. It is no credit to us to be reckless of that past from whose womb the present has sprung, and without which the present cannot be interpreted. Book History of the Seal and Flag of the State of New Hampshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Seal and Flag of the State of New Hampshire Classic Reprint written by Otis Grant Hammond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Seal and Flag of the State of New Hampshire The history of the seal of New Hampshire must necessarily begin with the first establishment of a separate government for the Province, and the assumption of administration by President John Cutt Jan. 1, From the first settlement in 1623 to 1641, during which time only four towns developed into existence, these towns failed to unite in a common govern ment. For many years the inhabitants were so few that an established form of government was not one of the necessities of a safe and orderly life. But with a steady increase in population the need of a code of laws and regulations and a recognized control ling power became manifest. As this necessity did not appear in all the towns at the same time, each dealt with its own affairs as circumstances seemed to require. The grant of New Hampshire to Capt. John Mason was not a charter, and did not convey any power of political government. Tuttle says, in his volume of Historical Papers, 1889, but the grant of so much power as should be necessary to protect his own rights and the rights of his servants, as well as to preserve order, must be understood as implied in the concession made to him. In theabsence of any general government, even of the simplest sort, the several communities or clusters of inhabitants in New Hampshire found themselves compelled at an early period to combine for self protection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Hampshire: An Epitome of Popular Government Such a chronicle I have sought to present, rather than a volume of consecutive annals, which spares us no event, however trivial. Trifles are often the hinges on which great revolutions turn; but the tendencies that develop a free state of free citizens are not shaped by trifiers nor depicted in minute analysis. Men that lead and men that follow are there needed, and it has been the good fortune of New Hampshire that she has ever had leaders, and never lacked the modest good sense to follow where they led.
