This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the 27th Regiment N. Y. Vols The official accounts of battles are all wonderfully alike, dealing with bodies and masses of men, and not with individual hopes, aspirations and fears. We read about marching and flanking and enfilading; but when we go behind these terms, and ask what the individual soldier in the ranks is thinking or doing or suffering, the story is too light to be included in an official report, and too unimportant for the dignity of general history; and yet, it is this unwritten history of the war that gives any true estimate of the price that was paid to save our nation. This history is designed to give more of individual and personal experience; not claiming that this regiment acted the most important part in the late war, but to show that its members offered themselves a willing sacrifice in the service of their country, and at no time did they withhold the best they had to give. Years have elapsed since we left the "lines and tented fields," but time cannot erase from memory recollections of those eventful days in which the Twenty-Seventh New York, by its heroism and zeal, helped to preserve the unity of the best and freest government ever established by man. The fact that they were actors in the great struggle, and a constituent element of the grandest army the world ever saw, engaged in the grand work of saving the Citadel of Freedom, makes them take a noteworthy pride in offering to history the following record, which is made up chiefly from private diaries, personal experience and general orders, as these tend to show the esteem in which the regiment was held by commanding officers. Our trust in the future of the country rests in the bravery, integrity and virtue of the men who fought for it. They have brought back the old flag, "its white as bright as angels' robes, and its stars God's stars, as truly as are the stars in the canopy of heaven." It was the original design to devote fifty pages to these, but it was found that this would not give every man an adequate obituary. We were therefore obliged to incorporate in the History of the Regiment and the Statistics, all notices except of the Field and Staff.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Seventh Regiment of New York, 1806 1889, Vol. 1 To write contemporaneous history, and especially to attempt bio graphical notices of officers of the Seventh Regiment now living or Well known to the present generation, would seem to be a hazardous undertaking. If it has been satisfactorily accomplished in this book, it is because the author during his long service in the Regiment has always appreciated and valued the services of those who have con tributed to its welfare and prosperity, and because at the end of his military career he harbors no animosities or prejudices, and has no friends that he would unduly exalt in these pages, and no enemies that he would depreciate here or elsewhere. Download or read book Dedication of the Monument to the 126th Regiment N Y Infantry written by New York Infantry Regiment and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dedication of the Monument to the 126th Regiment N. Y. Infantry: On the Battlefield of Gettysburg, October 3, 1888 In June, 1886, when the 111th, and 126th regiments, N. Y. volunteers, united in an excursion to the Battlefield of Gettysburg, the wish was expressed that within two or three years they might again visit the place for the purpose of erecting monuments in honor of their respective regiments. The excursion of the 126th regiment on the 1st of October was the realization in part of such wish. The excursion left Canandaigua at 8:30 o'clock Monday evening, October 1st, 1888, by a special train. Owing to the extreme inclemency of the weather, the number of persons was comparatively small, only about sixty uniting in the excursion. The run from Canandaigua was made without delay, accident, or special incident, the train arriving at Gettysburg at half-past six Tuesday morning. Breakfast was soon in readiness, to which the party did ample justice. Everything had been most thoughtfully and elaborately arranged for the comfort of the excursionists and to aid them in seeing the most in the shortest possible time. At eight o'clock Mr. Ziegler's carriages were at the door of the hotel, and in charge of the well-known battlefield lecturer, Capt. James T. Long, of Gettysburg, the party was soon on its way to view the battlefield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of Company C

Download or read book The History of Company C written by Theodore Wilder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Company C: Seventh Regiment, O. V. I This sketch and record were written at the suggestion and by the request of the surviving members of the Company. It was their desire to have a brief story of their marches, battles and sieges, and, especially, an accurate record of each member, to preserve for reference in future years. If this little publication will serve that purpose, the object of the author is fully accomplished. There has been no design on his part to entertain the public with a detailed and verbose account of patriotic deeds and severe hardships, above what many others may have endured who have taken part in the War of the Rebellion. Therefore, those who may chance to meet with a copy of this work, expecting to be entertained, will probably be disappointed. As the value of such a work as this, depends entirely upon its accuracy, great pains have been taken to avoid all mistakes. The author has had access to diaries and journals kept by the members, and official returns of the commanding officer, and is thus able to give the numerous dates and facts with a good degree of correctness: and though there may be errors, yet it is believed that very few occur.
