Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 2 Among the men whose careers reflect honor and credit upon the state that has honored them, none has risen to a position of higher distinction or left more indelibly his impress upon the history of the nation than did Senator Henry M. Teller. His ability to thoroughly grasp every point in all the great problems of the country, to look at any question from the broad standpoint of future needs as well as present opportunities, made him the peer of the ablest statesmen of America. Removing to the west with its boundless opportunities, he became one of the builders of the great western empire and the recognition of the important part which he was playing made him not only a leader of public thought and action in Colorado but in the nation as well. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Centennial History of the State of Colorado, Vol. 2 General william J. Palmer. (editorial Note.) Many men of strong minds, firm wills, gallant hearts and broad souls have been given to the building of the great West, but few have so finely combined the traits of hardihood and tenderness in the fashioning of the ideal gentleman and citizen as the late General William J. Palmer, who drew the last breath of his great, yet unassuming life, at beautiful Glen Eyrie, near Colorado Springs, on the 13th of March, 1909. After serving his country with fidelity, bravery and ability, and laying the foundation of the great rail way systems of Colorado which now furnish the outlets for its riches and people to the waiting sections of the West and South, he became the planter and husbandman of beautiful communities among the mountains. There in his homelike castle he lived for years, with mind active and clear, the soul of generosity, public spirit and broad comradeship. With physical strength gradually weakening, to the last he retained his hopeful spirit and, when but a wreck in body, his eye was still bright with the calm bravery of the typical soldier. The editor is thankful, beyond words, that the fine, dear old general was spared to verify the facts and express his ap preciation of the following review of his life - undoubtedly the last which has been thus honored. For this reason the text is retained as it was sub mitted to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 2 of 3: Prepared Under the Supervision of the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado The first successful colony on the neighboring Martinez grant, west of the Rio Grande, was established in 1854. The promoter of this colony was J osé Maria J aquez, who selected a site at Guadaloupe, on the Conejos River, in August of that year. While final preparations were being made to move to the new location in the autumn of 1854, the colonists were joined by Major Lafayette Head of Ser villeta.11 Head was a Missourian who had gone to Santa Fé in 1846 as a private under the command of Colonel Sterling Price. At the expiration of his term of service he decided to remain in New Mexico, where, as merchant and colonizer, he rose to a position of influence among his Mexican friends as is shown by his subsequent elections to the legislatures of New Mexico and Colorado. In spite of troubles with the Indians, the Conejos colonists retained their lands; the population of Conejos County in 1868 was estimated at mostly Mexicans.12 Apart from an occasional Indian scare, it was a quiet life that the Mexicans lived in the San Luis Valley. Their principal industry was grazing, and for theirflocks and herds there was an abundance of land and grass and water. In agriculture they followed the crude methods used by their fathers for generations before them. They were scarcely touched by the rushing currents of life in the outside world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 3 of 3: Prepared Under the Supervision of the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado With the prospectors seeking gold in our mountains in 1858 and 1859 there was little need for banks. Most of these Argonauts were poor. Their wealth consisted only of their personal belongings, supplies and provisions. They had little money and there was little need for any. The great West was yet to be opened to industry and commerce. In general it was uninhabited, save for wandering tribes of Indians. The scattered traders carried on their business by barter and in the primitive state of development of the western country no banking services were in demand. Download or read book History of Colorado Vol 3 written by Wilbur Fiske Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 3: Illustrated In the summer of 1865, at the request of John Edgar Thompson, Thomas A. Scott and other Pennsylvania Railroad friends, General Palmer was elected secretary and treasurer of the Kansas Pacific Railroad Company, then controlling the Union Pacific eastern division. This was the initial step that brought him ultimately to Colorado and his services here were of the greatest benefit in the development of the resources and the upbuilding of the state. He remained with the Kansas Pacific Railroad as manager of construction while it was being constructed to Denver in 1869 and 1870, was a factor in the building of the Denver Pacific road between Denver and Cheyenne in the same years, instituted the plans leading to the establishment of the Denver Rio Grande Railroad system and put these plans into execution. In 1872 he was active in organiz ing the Central Colorado Improvement Company, which later became the Colorado Coal Iron Company and is now the Colorado Fuel Iron Company. He remained the active head of the Denver Rio Grande until August, 1883, when he resigned to give greater attention to his railroad enterprise in Mexico, promoted under the name of the Mexican National Railroad. But he continued to remain as president of the Rio Grande Western road extending from Grand Junction, Colorado, to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, until April, 1901, when he withdrew from personal participation in its affairs and from an active railroad career, which, save for the period of his four years' service _in the Union army, had extended over a period of forty-seven years. His retirement was marked by a most noteworthy gift - the distribution of stock and cash of the value of one million dollars to those who had long been in the service of, the company. General Palmer was the founder and promoter of Colorado Springs, which came into existence in the summer of 1871. He organized the company that secured title to ten thousand acres of land, upon part of which the city was laid out. He was also identified with the founding of South Pueblo, Alamosa, Durango and several towns of lesser importance on the Denver Rio Grande, but his interests centered in Colorado Springs, where he made his home. His gifts to it were many and yet he never figured prominently in this connection but kept himself always in the background and most modestly disclaimed any credit for what he did.
