Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 3 My situation I conceive to be favourable for the disco very and delivery of truth in history. I belong to no sect or party, in religion or politics. A member of the Church of England, I give it in my mind a moderate preference to any other, without taking on me to assert that it is ab solutely the best; in politics, it is to me personally a mat ter of perfect indifl'erence what party has the disposal of the patronage of the state, for place or pension I neither desire nor want, and would not accept. Perhaps this forms as near an approach as may be to the paradoxical character of a good historian - that il ne faudroit etre d'aucune te ligion, d'auctm pays, d'aucune profession, d'aucun parti. Book Introduction to the History of Civilization in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to the History of Civilization in England Classic Reprint written by Henry Thomas Buckle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Civilization in England It was suggested to Buckle, before the issue of his second volume, that he himself should publish a popular edition of his book without the notes. It is now reprinted, with all the notes and many fresh annotations, at a lower price than would have been charged in Buckle's day for an abridgment. Even notes that might have been held redundant are faithfully reproduced, so that the student can everywhere judge of Buckle's work for himself and the editor's notes are scrupulously distinguished from his by brackets, and by the absence of reference numbers. Buckle's references in his second volume to the first are of course altered to apply to the present edition. A few small grammatical errors, evidently due to his weak health at the period of publication, have been corrected but where correction would involve interference with the cadence or structure of a sentence, even grammatical laxities have been left untouched. Some difference of opinion may arise on a point which has given the editor some perplexity - the question. Download or read book History of the People of England Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Alice Drayton Greenwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the People of England, Vol. 1 The plan of the series can be explained in a few words. The early volumes are for children under ten whose study of history can only reach to the kindling of the imagination to realise in some degree how our forefathers lived, and who were the great builders of the mighty structure which is the nation of which they form a part. The middle part of the series is designed for the use of girls and boys of twelve to fourteen, who are at a stage of mental develop ment at which they should be able to trace a thread of continuity, and to connect cause and effect in the great story, which thus, besides giving food for imagination, begins the training of powers of judgment. The Senior books are for the use of those of fifteen and upward, able now to begin to weigh evidence, to ponder on the significance of facts, to cultivate the gift of historical thinking, which is better than historical learning. Book The History of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Keightley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The animal nature of man has, tmtil within a comparatively re cent period, held the chief sway in all political relations, and the settlement of political disputes. By the animal nature is here simply meant the impulses which lead to the love of acquisition and the glory of the battle-field, - both as purely animal impulses as any that mark the beasts that perish; both happily, now, though only very recently, reduced, in all most civilized comma nitiea under subjection to the moral and intellectual nature of man. Hence, in such political histories, battles and their details are too ti'equent. Nations, until a very recent period, have ia variably had recourse, in the settlement of all disputes, to the barbarous form of wager of battle, to decide the right, although, by the express laws of almost every nation in Europe, wag-sr of battle between individuals has been long abolished. It is extra ordinary that so barbarous and absurd a custom should have been thus so inconsistently persevered in, in the one case, while it has been abolished in the Other. The public mind in England is, however, at the present time, in general, as much opposed to the appeal to this antiquated ordeal in the one case as the other; and it is to be hoped that the page of the future historian will abound chie y in details of the moral and intellectual history of that as well as other nations; and that the history of society, of science, and of literature, will take high precedence of the his tory of politics. Meantime, the history of the politics of every nation must be studied by 'all who would observe the advance of nations, or truly understand their actual condition. More especially is that study important in respect of those nations where, as in England, the struggle between general independence and assumed individual prerogative, has been long continued and eventful, though crowned at last with noble and glorious success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1 Confessor, who takes care of the king's con science, and imposes very hard penances upon him when he has sinned. But for some time past, our kings have been accustomed to turn their chaplains really to good use, by employing them constantly as their writing clerks. In this capacity the most irnportant matters of public business must pass through their hands. Hence they have much power, and a power which was 'totally unknown to our ancestors; and in this innovating age, their influence has been greatly 'increased by a fashion which our good king Edward has brought from France. He has caused a great seal to be made, on which you may see his effigy, in his imperial robes; and to all the writs or written letters, which issue in his name, an impression from that seal is appended.
