It is hard to class this first class of names under those of mythology, for they hear in them our own honoured word for divinity; and though some arose when the race were worshippers of false deities, yet under the same head are included many given in a Christian spirit. Some philologists tell us, though they are not unanimous in the explanation, that this name is from the same source as the Sanscrit Svaddta, self-given or uncreate, and as the Zend Quadata, Persian Khoda, and our own Teuton term for Deity--the Northern Chtd and Gothic Gruth, whence the High German Cot and Low German &od.
