Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Camden and Rockport Maine The old town of Camden, which includes the present towns of Camden and Rockport, has a most interesting history, to preserve which is the object of this volume. Mr. Locke's excellent "Sketches of the History of Camden" has long been out of print, and but a few copies are now extant. That work was published nearly half a century ago, and many important events, happening since its publication, would have become lost to future generations unless someone had undertaken the task of compiling a new history. As no one else seemed inclined to enter upon the undertaking the writer essayed the arduous and somewhat delicate work of putting into print the deeds and lives of the Camden and Rockport people from the earliest period to the present time. This work is essentially a "home made" production, as the author is a citizen of Camden, it was printed by the Camden Publishing Company and bound by Mr. Edwin F. Dillingham of Bangor, who is a member of an old Camden family and one of Camden's oldest and most loyal summer residents. The author does not claim that the work is in all respects a complete one. No work of the kind can be complete, and he is conscious that many important events may have been left out and that from the personal sketches of the lives of men of the two towns some doubtless have been omitted who are as deserving of mention as many whose lives have been given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of a century, this new book looks back at over one hundred years of Camden's and Rockport's history, with photographs of the people, places, and events which have defined the proud and vibrant communities we know so well today. Author and local resident Barbara Dyer has collected over two hundred old photographs and postcards of Camden, Rockport, and the surrounding area which range from the late 1800s to the 1950s. These delightful images show buildings long gone and others which are still familiar features of the local landscape; they bring to life events both catastrophic and celebratory from the fascinating history of these beautiful coastal communities. Most of all, the photographs introduce us to the ordinary folk who lived, loved, worked, and had fun in these tight-knit towns: fishermen, sailors, store owners, teachers, schoolchildren, and hundreds of others whose lives are such an integral part of the story of Camden and Rockport.

In almost every case, the author furnishes the names of the subject's parents, spouse, children, and spouse's parents, usually citing the subject's date of marriage and the dates or places of birth and death of at least these three generations of family members. In most instances, the subject's lineage can be traced back to the first half of the 19th century. Following are the surnames of the persons featured in the biographical sketches, as compiled from the indexes appearing at the back of each volume"--Publisher website (December 2008)

Book The Nightingale s Sonata

Download or read book The Nightingale s Sonata written by Thomas Wolf and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Winner of the Sophie Brody Medal* A moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the rich life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists. Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale's Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luboshutz. Like many poor Jews, music offered an escape from the predjudices that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky. As the world around them descends in to chaos, between revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually, America. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola and even Leo Tolstoy. The little girl from Odessa will eventually end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young. The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, she plays on. Woven throughout this luminous odyssey is the story is Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano.” As Lea was one of the first-ever internationally recognized female violinists, it is fitting that this pioneer was one of the strongest advocates for this young boundary-pushing composer and his masterwork.

Book excerpt: The Appalachian mountain chain once contained the highest and most dramatic mountains on earth. Worn down over time, these mountains still hold some of the most diverse climactic zones and singular geological formations in existence. In East 40 Degrees: An Interpretive Atlas, Jack Williams examines a succession of beautiful but little-known towns along this cordillera (a term descended from the Latin chorda, meaning "braided rope"), revealing in their layers of history and geography how both their diverse cultural and social circumstances and their geological history were instrumental in forming each town's distinctive character.Referring to the spatial orientation of the Appalachian mountain chain, the "east 40 degrees" of the title runs from Alabama through fifteen states to the coast of Maine. Each town Williams examines sits within the folds of these mountains or beside a river nourished in their moist uplands. Beginning his record with the continental collisions that shaped each town's history more than 300 million years ago, Williams allows us to "see the tenuous web of connections between ourselves and the natural processes that shape this earth." Featuring a wealth of beautiful and significant illustrations and maps, this unique work brings into focus the critical issues of environmental and cultural sustainability confronting us today. Elegant, poetic, and erudite, East 40 Degrees will appeal to architects and landscape architects, planners, environmental historians, ecologists, geographers, and anyone interested in the history and origins of our modern landscapes and towns. Publication of this volume was assisted by a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund.
