Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Camden and Rockport Maine The old town of Camden, which includes the present towns of Camden and Rockport, has a most interesting history, to preserve which is the object of this volume. Mr. Locke's excellent "Sketches of the History of Camden" has long been out of print, and but a few copies are now extant. That work was published nearly half a century ago, and many important events, happening since its publication, would have become lost to future generations unless someone had undertaken the task of compiling a new history. As no one else seemed inclined to enter upon the undertaking the writer essayed the arduous and somewhat delicate work of putting into print the deeds and lives of the Camden and Rockport people from the earliest period to the present time. This work is essentially a "home made" production, as the author is a citizen of Camden, it was printed by the Camden Publishing Company and bound by Mr. Edwin F. Dillingham of Bangor, who is a member of an old Camden family and one of Camden's oldest and most loyal summer residents. The author does not claim that the work is in all respects a complete one. No work of the kind can be complete, and he is conscious that many important events may have been left out and that from the personal sketches of the lives of men of the two towns some doubtless have been omitted who are as deserving of mention as many whose lives have been given. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The towns of Camden and Rockport have had a rich, intertwined history since the first settlements in the mid-1700s. Until 1891, they were one town, built on the abundant natural resources of coastal Maine. Many residents in the early 19th century were farmers that carved out a living from the soil, or fishermen that harvested the teeming waters of Penobscot Bay. As the towns grew, successful industries were established that sustained the communities through the mid-20th century. These included fishing, textile mills, lime manufacturing, an anchor factory, and shipbuilding. Majestic schooners were built in the shipyards, and businesses such as the Bay View House hotel, S.B. Haskell's clothing store, numerous livery stables and harness shops, Joseph Brewster's Shirt Manufactory, and Knowlton Brothers Foundry lined the main thoroughfares. In Rockport, the Shepherd Company supplied lime, and the Rockport Ice Company cut ice on Lily Pond to be shipped as far as the Caribbean. These tight-knit villages, nestled "where the mountains meet the sea," weathered fires and wars, celebrated the launches of massive sailing vessels, and welcomed summer "rusticators" who helped form a lasting legacy of arts, culture, and learning that continues to draw visitors today.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OP SOME.OF THE MOST PROMINENT OP THE EARLY AND RECENT CITIZENS OF CAMDEN. IN glancing at the history of Camden, we find the names of a number of persons, whose prominence as citizens, entitles them to more than the passing notice we have given them. It will be fou*ndthat this town has contributed, quite largely, its share of those who have filled important positions, in both civil, and social life. Such ones may be deemed worthy of a biographical sketch. There are others, also, whose personal reputation has been known but little beyond the limits of their town, whom we shall notice, as being deserving of mention from the interest that attaches to them locally. In the order of time, without classification, we will now proceed. First on the list, occurs the name of Lieut. John Harkness, who was born in Lunenburg, Mass., June, 1750. At the age of eighteen, he commenced learning the shoemakers' trade at New Ipswich, N. H. Soon after serving an apprenticeship in St. Crispin's art, the war cloud of the Revolution began to darken, and, like a patriot, Harkness enlisted for the struggle under Capt. Ezra Towne, in the capacity of a lieutenant. He participated in the battles of Bunker Hill, and Ticonderoga. So close was one of his engagements with the enemy, that the tow wad of a gun lodged in his cockade hat, where it burned a perforation. The hardship he underwent, induced an attack of the fever and ague, which so far impaired his health, as to unfit him for further military duty. Being advised to recruit his strength by visiting the sea coast, he embarked in a vessel for Lermond's Cove, (now Rockland, ) and in 1779 came to Camden. Soon after he settled here, an expedition of twenty patriots from the vicinity of..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of a century, this new book looks back at over one hundred years of Camden's and Rockport's history, with photographs of the people, places, and events which have defined the proud and vibrant communities we know so well today. Author and local resident Barbara Dyer has collected over two hundred old photographs and postcards of Camden, Rockport, and the surrounding area which range from the late 1800s to the 1950s. These delightful images show buildings long gone and others which are still familiar features of the local landscape; they bring to life events both catastrophic and celebratory from the fascinating history of these beautiful coastal communities. Most of all, the photographs introduce us to the ordinary folk who lived, loved, worked, and had fun in these tight-knit towns: fishermen, sailors, store owners, teachers, schoolchildren, and hundreds of others whose lives are such an integral part of the story of Camden and Rockport.

Book The Nightingale s Sonata

Download or read book The Nightingale s Sonata written by Thomas Wolf and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Winner of the Sophie Brody Medal* A moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the rich life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists. Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale's Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luboshutz. Like many poor Jews, music offered an escape from the predjudices that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky. As the world around them descends in to chaos, between revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually, America. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola and even Leo Tolstoy. The little girl from Odessa will eventually end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young. The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, she plays on. Woven throughout this luminous odyssey is the story is Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano.” As Lea was one of the first-ever internationally recognized female violinists, it is fitting that this pioneer was one of the strongest advocates for this young boundary-pushing composer and his masterwork.

Download or read book Maine written by Richard William Judd and published by Orono, Me. : University of Maine Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of Maine to be published in decades, Maine: The Pine Tree State surveys the region's rich history from prehistoric times to the early 1990s. Drawing on a team of twenty-six scholars with a professional interest in Maine's past, the book features fresh research and new interpretations of even familiar periods such as the Civil War. The chapter authors are respected authorities in Maine history from the fields of archaeology, anthropology, ethnic studies, and the various sub-disciplines of history: political, cultural, economic, labor, military, maritime. Certain themes recur from chapter to chapter and across historical periods. For example, larger structural changes in the nation - market trends, wars, economic fluctuations, demographic flows - strongly affected the everyday world of Maine people. Other prominent themes are the importance of geography and the environment in shaping Maine's economy and culture. Caught up at times in national events, Maine has also led the nation in important ways. Its fishing industry fed and its textile industry clothed the nation's people. Maine loggers contributed heavily to the technologies used in cutting, hauling, and driving timber. Maine excelled in the production of wooden ships and supplied the expertise to sail them. In the nineteenth century Maine's political leaders were among the most powerful in the nation, and Maine's contribution to social reform attracted national recognition.
