Download or read book History of Burford Classic Reprint written by William John Monk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Burford There are not many towns just like Burford. It stands to-day very much as it did in the days of the Georges and before. The long, wide street, the old houses, the venerable Tolsey and the Church make up a picture of past times which it has seemed well to represent by pencil and by pen, before the now distant railway invades the quiet town, bringing with it the destroying hand and disturbing influence of modern civilisation; before, too, the records of the rich historical and other associations of Burford are dispersed by Time's relentless hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Town of Burford, Oxfordshire The compilation of a local History is always one involving much labour and research, but especially so when the in habitants of the Town that is the subject of it do not possess any Antiquarian taste and are unable to render the requisite information. The Author of this small Work has felt this difficulty and discouragement, yet he has spared neither toil nor zeal in collecting materials, and if they are more scanty than he or his Readers could have desired it must be attributed to the cause above alluded to. Important documents relating to the Church-property and Town Charities* in the posses sion of thomas cheatle, Esq, have been unreservedly placed at his disposal, and to that gentleman he returns his grateful thanks for the privilege so kindly accorded. He also begs to offer his sincere thanks to W. R. Cooke, Esq, for his liberality in presenting two Illustrations to the Work, and to five other kind friends for their contributions towards other Illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Burford Records: A Study in Minor Town Government MY thanks are due to many whose kindness has contributed to the making of this book. In the first place, I have to thank Mrs. Cheatle, who, by allowing me access to the portion of the Burford Records in her possession, gave the first im pulse towards what has become a considerable undertaking. Secondly, I express my thanks to the Burford Charity Trustees for the long study I was permitted to make of the Records in their keeping. In this connexion I gladly acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. E. J. Horniman, who not Only provided the monetary guarantee required by the Trustees for the safety of their documents, but has, throughout my work, given me that peculiarly valuable kind of encouragement - an ever-ready interest in the details of my investigations. To the President and Fellows of Brasenose College, Oxford, my thanks are due for permission to print extracts from the series of leases of property in Burford formerly held by the College, which the kindness of the Bursar of the College enabled me to consult, and from which I have gathered some of the earliest facts, hitherto unknown, in the history of the Corporation of Burford. The Rev. W. C. Emeris, m.a., Vicar of Burford and Rural Dean, has added to many incidental kindnesses' the writing of much of the chapter on the parish church of Burford, thus giving to my book in that respect an authority which no one else could have given it. I am sincerely grateful to him for the generosity with which he has allowed me to make use of his knowledge in this and other points of Burford history. To the skill of my brother-in-law, Mr. David Crichton, m.a., and of Mr. Frederick Hall, Controller of the Oxford University Press, I owe the admirable series of photographs of Burford. Buildings; and to Mr. H. E. Conway the view of Burford, from a painting by him, which appears as the frontispiece. Book Burford Papers

Download or read book Burford Papers written by William Holden Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burford Papers: Being Letters of Samuel Crisp to His Sister at Burford; And Other Studies of a Century (1745-1845) Such unity as these "Studies of a Century" possess is due to all of them, I believe, having been written either to or in a house at Burford, in Oxfordshire, and so I call them all Burford Papers. The letters which form the earlier part of this volume have been most kindly placed at my disposal by Mrs. Edward Egerton Leigh, of Broadwell Manor House, Moreton-in-Marsh, who has also helped me more than I can say by her stores of knowledge about all that belongs to the Leighs and their kindred and friends. The further illustrations which we gain from these letters of Samuel Crisp of the literary circle in which Fanny Burney moved at the time of her first great success will, I hope, be welcomed by all those to whom Dr. Johnson and the Thrales, as well as the author of Evelina, are old friends. I think that the other details, more domestic, of the letters medical, pecuniary, and the like are also worth preserving; and certainly the picture which is given of the writer himself is a delightful one. The other papers in the book were all (or nearly all) written in the house where Mrs. Gast lived when she received the letters of her brother, Samuel Crisp. I have described different parts of it in the course of the volume. The letters of Samuel Crisp have never been printed before; and, of my own sketches, those called In the Other House, Some Oxfordshire Jacobites, A Spanish Court Painter, "A Bath Evening," The Rev. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ... Ecclesiastical Burforb. THE SYNOD. 5jOR many years before the 7thcentuiy a strife had raged between the ancient British Church and the Roman Church respecting the question, "When should Easter Day be kept?" The Britons adhered to the rule laid down at the Council of Aries, A.d. 3r4, that Easter Day should be the 14th day of the Paschal moon, even if it were on a Sunday. The Roman Church had decided that when the 14th day of the Paschal moon was a Sunday, Easter Day should be the Sunday after. Various Synods were held in different parts of the kingdom with the object of settling this controversy, and one was held for this object at Burford A.d. 685. We may deduce from the fact of the Synod being held at Burford, that the Britons in some numbers had settled in the town and neighbourhood. This Synod was attended by Ethelred, King of Mercia, and his nephew Berthwald (who had been granted the Southern part of his uncle's kingdom); Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury; Borel, Bishop of Worcester; Sexwulph, Bishop of Lichfield; Aldhelm, Abbot of Malmesbury; and many others. The Archbishop Theodore mentioned certainly left his mark on the history of the Church. The circumstances under which he was appointed Primate are as follows: a remarkable mortality had seized the Saxon Bishops, and as the Churches of Rome and England were at this time in close connection, the Saxons asked the Pope if he would select a man for Archbishop. This was quite natural, as the Pontiff had a large field from which to make a selection; and, moreover, the last candidate for the Archbishopric that the Saxons had sent over to Rome for consecration died on the voyage, and there were few men, on account of the mortality referred to, equal to undertaking that very onerous...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brant Historical Society: Papers and Records, 1930 It was by this purchase that the British Government secured actual and just ownership to that territory in which is situated the Township of Burford as well as the present County of Brant. Previous to this transaction only one township in the present Province of ontario-kingston - had by order of General A. Clarke, been surveyed out. Settlement on the Niagara did not commence before the advent of the U. E. Loyalists in 1784, but it was not until the year 1787 that the first townships in that district, Stamford and Niagara, were surveyed out, the work being done by Dep. Surveyor Frey, formerly a Lieutenant in Butlers Rangers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Topography of Bradford I hope, however, that the blemishes of the work will be, to its general merit, merely as a few freckles on a fair countenance. An amount of time unconceived by my readers has been bestowed upon the facts. In a pro duction of this nature, it is almost impossible to be wholly correct; but it is anticipated that errors of fact will not be more numerous in this volume than in others of its class. I originally intended to have given the separate authorities for the whole of my statements, but I soon found that such a plan would inconveniently load the pages with notes.
