Book History of British Trotskyism

Download or read book History of British Trotskyism written by Ted Grant and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Ted Grant is a unique contribution to the history of British Trotskyism. It begins with the debate on Trotskyism in the British Communist Party in 1924 and ends with the break-up of the Revolutionary Communist Party in 1949 and the beginning of more than thirty years of work within the Labour Party. Ted Grant was the founder and political leader of the “Militant Tendency”, which haunted the Labour leadership, and was eventually expelled along with the Militant editorial board in 1983. A postscript by Rob Sewell, who was the national organiser for the Militant throughout the 1980s, brings this unique history up to date.

Book excerpt: Trotsky’s Writings on Britain span one of the most tumultuous periods in British history. The first decades of the 20th century were a time of crisis on all fronts for British capitalism. Britain was rapidly sinking to a second-rate position among the world powers. Violent eruptions of class struggle shook capitalist rule to its very foundations. Amidst all this, the Marxists were striving to build a mass revolutionary party as the precondition of capitalism’s overthrow. These writings were intended to assist the communists of the time to achieve their historic task. The same task is posed before us once more today. The thread of history is being re-tied, and Britain is once more moving towards revolutionary crises. This collection is indispensable for the Marxists who must rise to face this challenge. Trotsky has a profound affinity for his subject, which he brings to bear on a remarkable range of questions: from the history, psychology, philosophy and morality of the British ruling class; to Britain’s revolutionary traditions going back to Chartism and the English Revolution; to the 1926 general strike, and the questions of revolutionary strategy and tactics that the Marxists faced in the stormy decade of the 1930s. This book includes all three volumes in a single edition, and features a new introduction by Rob Sewell, author of Chartist Revolution and In the Cause of Labour: A History of British Trade Unionism.

Book Contemporary Trotskyism

Download or read book Contemporary Trotskyism written by John Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 80 years after Leon Trotsky founded the Fourth International, there are now Trotskyist organizations in 57 countries, including most of Western Europe and Latin America. Yet no Trotskyist group has ever led a revolution or built an enduring mass, political party. Contemporary Trotskyism looks in detail at the influence, resilience and weaknesses of the British Trotskyist movement, from the 1970s to the present day. The book argues that to understand and explain the development, resilience and influence of Trotskyist groups, we need to analyse them as bodies that comprise elements of three types of organization: the political party, the sect and the social movement. It is the properties of these three facets of organization and the interplay between them that gives rise to the most characteristic features of the Trotskyist movement: frenetic activity, rampant divisions, inter-organizational hostility, authoritarian and charismatic leadership, high membership turnover and ideological rigidity. Trotskyist groups have been involved in a wide range of important social movements including trade unions, student unions, anti-war, anti-racist and anti-fascist groups. While their energy and activity in civil society have had some success, their influence has never been reflected in votes or seats at elections even after the financial crisis. Drawing on extensive archival research, as well as interviews with many of the leading protagonists and activists within the Trotskyist milieu, this is essential reading for students, activists and researchers with an interest in the far left, social movements and contemporary British political history.

Book Ted Grant Writings Volume One Trotskyism and the Second World War 1938 1942

Download or read book Ted Grant Writings Volume One Trotskyism and the Second World War 1938 1942 written by Ted Grant and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of Ted Grant’s Writings. It covers the period from 1938 to 1942, when he was involved in building up the forces of Trotskyism in Britain. During the early years of the Second World War, Ted became editor of the Socialist Appeal and political secretary of the Workers’ International League. In this role Ted emerged as the principal theoretician of the British Trotskyist movement. His participation in the revolutionary movement was to span a period from 1928, when he was introduced to Marxism, through to his death in 2006. For all those who knew him, he was a truly remarkable and inspiring figure. The articles and documents contained in this first volume of his Writings coincided with the emergence of the WIL as one of the most successful Trotskyist groups in the world. This present volume covers a decisive time in history. It was the most testing time for British and world Trotskyism. As Hitler occupied Europe, the WIL was alone on the continent in applying the proletarian military policy that had been outlined by Trotsky. This it managed to do in the most successful fashion, allowing the WIL to establish an important proletarian base. We publish here only the articles that were either signed by Ted or that he drafted in his role as the WIL’s political secretary. He would have certainly written the vast bulk of the editorials of Socialist Appeal, but these have not been included. These writings constitute an essential and rich part of the theoretical heritage of Marxism, which can serve to educate the new generation of workers and youth who are entering into political activity at this time of deep capitalist crisis.

First published in hardcover in 1987, this volume comprises the best of Gibson's work throughout his 30 year career. 10.5x15 Callinicos (politics, U. of York, UK) traces the intellectual history of the movement, first examining its origins in Trotsky's own thought, and then exploring the crisis into which the Trotskyist Fourth International was thrown at the end of WWII, when its founder's predictions were apparently refuted by the strength and stability of both Western capitalism and Stalinism. Book Ted Grant The Permanent Revolutionary

Download or read book Ted Grant The Permanent Revolutionary written by Alan Woods and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ted Grant was a well-known figure in the international Marxist movement. He had a significant impact on British politics. When he died all the most important newspapers carried extensive obituaries that recognised this fact. This is a remarkable work that comprehensively covers the development of Ted's life and ideas, starting from his early family background in Johannesburg right up to his death in London in 2006 at the age of 93. From his earliest youth in South Africa Ted Grant dedicated his life to the struggle for the emancipation of the working class. Moving to Britain in 1934 to seek new horizons, within a decade he had become the leading theoretician of the Trotskyist movement. The book deals with the launch of the Fourth International and Ted's battle to defend the ideas of Trotsky, which brought him into conflict with the leaders of the International after the Second World War. It explains the important theoretical questions and debates of this period and it outlines Ted Grant's important theoretical contribution to Marxism. Ted was the founder and theoretical inspirer of the Militant Tendency, which Michael Crick once described as the fifth political party in Britain. The book traces the rise and fall of Militant. It provides a fascinating insight into a subject that remains a closed book to most political analysts even now.
