Book The History of Bendigo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Bendigo Classic Reprint written by George Mackay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Bendigo Readers who honor me by a perusal of this work will perceive that the first eight chapters deal with the general history of Bendigo, from the gold discovery in 1851 down to the present day chapters nine, ten, and eleven are devoted to an account of Mining Development; chapters twelve and thirteen to Politics; and chapter fourteen to matters Municipal. Thereafter follow chapters on Water Supply, Journalism, Public Institutions, the Churches, Amusements, Agriculture and Viticulture, and lastly on Local Industries. I have found facts and events besetting me in my investigations in such battalions that I have had no occasion to draw on my imagination, or to adorn the tale. The narrative is plain and unvarnished. Book Archaeology and History of the Chinese in Southern New Zealand During the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Archaeology and History of the Chinese in Southern New Zealand During the Nineteenth Century written by Neville A. Ritchie and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of Dr Neville A. Ritchie’s 1986 PhD dissertation explores the history and archaeology of the 19th century Chinese mining communities in the Clutha Valley, New Zealand. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white line drawings of Chinese domestic and industrial sites, and of the artefacts excavated from them, this study offers unprecedented insight into the life and material culture of these male-only “sojourner” communities. Widely considered the most comprehensive archaeological study of overseas Chinese miners’ experience anywhere in the world, this volume contains the total summation and analysis of artefacts found in 23 Chinese sites excavated over nine years, which included two camps (with 40 individual huts and other features), a Chinese store and 20 rural sites, including miner’s huts and rock shelters. Considered by the Australian Society for Historical Archaeology to be a seminal work in the field of historical archaeology, this 2023 edition introduces Dr. Ritchie’s groundbreaking work to the next generation of archaeologists.

Book Heritage and Community Engagement

Download or read book Heritage and Community Engagement written by Emma Waterton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the way that professionals in archaeology and in other sectors of heritage interact with a range of stakeholder groups, communities and the wider public. Whilst these issues have been researched and discussed over many years and in many geographical contexts, the debate seems to have settled into a comfortable stasis wherein it is assumed that all that can be done by way of engagement has been done and there is little left to achieve. In some cases, such engagement is built on legislation or codes of ethics and there can be little doubt that it is an important and significant aspect of heritage policy. This book is different, however, because it questions not so much the motivations of heritage professionals but the nature of the engagement itself, the extent to which this is collaborative or contested and the implications this has for the communities concerned. Furthermore, in exploring these issues in a variety of contexts around the world, it recognises that heritage provides a source of engagement within communities that is separate from professional discourse and can thus enable them to find voices of their own in the political processes that concern them and affect their development, identity and well-being. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of Heritage Studies.
