Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Bear Lake (NY) has at its core 12 chapters based on recorded oral histories of long-time Bear Lake families, both residential and seasonal. It also includes chapters on the Bear Lake Property Owners Association and its later Bear Lake Association, on the Association's successful bio-control program to combat invasive weed species, on how the required New York State Title Search can be used to discover the history of one's cottage/home, on the local basket factory, on the officers and directors of the two Associations, and a chapter entitled "Did You Know That?" which records tales, myths, anecdotes and miscellanea about Bear Lake. Two early chapters describe the early natural/cultural history of the Bear Lake region and how the western half of New York State was mapped into town and ranges and lots by the surveyors employed by the Holland Land Company to describe almost 3 million wilderness acres now known as Western New York. Bob and Anne Deming have had a home at Bear Lake for almost 40 years, first as a summer cottage, then renovated as a year-round residence, and now functioning as a summer home again for 4 months each year. They have been active in the Bear Lake Association, Anne having served as President for several years and Bob having served as Secretary, Historian, and the Bear Lake Newsletter editor. Each summer since 2003, Bob and Anne have welcomed their 3 children and their 5 grandchildren to Bear Lake. Previous to that time, summer stays at the Bear Lake cottage varied depending on where Bob and Anne were during summers.

Book excerpt: "Big Bear Lake - The Struggle With Water Land & Power" is a documented history of competing entities with conflicting agendas, and of people in power who may or may not have had the best interests of the valley's private citizens. As a practicing attorney in San Bernardino, the author developed many professional relationships with individuals who were involved in or had first hand knowledge of the events, business decisions, and legal decisions that shaped today's Big Bear. The author attempts to separate facts from fiction. He presents the history of Big Bear Lake based on official records and legal decisions heretofore not widely published. The book focuses on the activities of the Bear Valley Mutual Water Company (BVM) who purchased the 1884 lake and most of the surrounding land out of foreclosure in the early 1900's, and created a new larger Big Bear Lake. It covers the development of all the waterfront property, and in places, more. It tells of pioneers such as Frank Brown, John Fisher, Bill Knickerbocker, and the Talmadge brothers "Will, John, and Frank". The book documents the challenges faced in both managing the lake, and in developing the land around the lake. The "Struggle For Water Land and Power" is illustrated with hundreds of images and supporting documents which show the development of boating, commercial boat landings, and all the original lakeshore camps, and resorts such as Samarkand, Moon Camp, Stillwell's, and Pine Knot Lodge, which started the Big Bear Village. This history of Big Bear Lake is an important part of our California history about water and land. If you prefer history that is based on official and legally documented facts, you will love this book.

Book All Because of a Mormon Cow

    Book Details:
  • Author : John D. McDermott
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2018-11-22
  • ISBN : 0806163038
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book All Because of a Mormon Cow written by John D. McDermott and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 19, 1854, U.S. Army lieutenant John L. Grattan led a detachment of twenty-nine soldiers and one civilian interpreter to a large Lakota encampment near Fort Laramie to arrest an Indian man accused of killing a Mormon emigrant’s cow. The terrible series of events that followed, which became known as the Grattan Massacre, unleashed the opening volley in the First Sioux War—and marked the beginning of a generation of Indian warfare on the Great Plains. All Because of a Mormon Cow tells, for the first time, the full story of this seminal event in the history of the American West. Where previous accounts of the Grattan Massacre have made do with limited primary sources, this volume includes eighty contemporary, annotated accounts of the fight and its aftermath, many newly discovered or recovered from obscurity. Recorded when the events were fresh in their narrators’ memories, these documents bring a sense of immediacy to a story more than a century and a half old. Alongside the voices heard here—of the Indian leaders Little Thunder and Big Partisan, of Mormons from passing emigrant trains, and of government officials charged with investigating the massacre, among many others—the editors include a substantial and thorough introduction that underscores the significance of the Grattan Massacre in all its depth and detail. All Because of a Mormon Cow offers a better understanding even as it evokes the drama of a highly controversial episode in the history of relations between Indians and non-Indians in the American West.
