Download or read book History of Baalbek Classic Reprint written by Michel M. Alouf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Baalbek In my previous editions of the history of Baal bek, I had drawn my facts from the best authorities then known, but the new light thrown on the subject by the German Mission shows, that, on some points, my information was inexact. Profiting by the discoveries of the German Mission and by those I have made myself, Ihave been able to make many corrections 111 the present work. In the former edition of my book, I inserted two plans, one representing the original state of the temple, one showing their present con dition. These plans were the most exact to be obtained at that time; the German Mission have provided us with more precise ones. Thanks to them, I have been able to give, in this edition, the plans of the temples, before they were touched by either the Byzantines or the Arabs, thus giving a good idea of the grandeur of Roman Architecture at its apogee. I have also added a plan, showing the present ruined state of the temples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Fingerprints of the Gods written by Graham Hancock and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could the story of mankind be far older than we have previously believed? Using tools as varied as archaeo-astronomy, geology, and computer analysis of ancient myths, Graham Hancock presents a compelling case to suggest that it is. Graham Hancock is featured in Ancient Apocalypse, a Netflix original docuseries. “A fancy piece of historical sleuthing . . . intriguing and entertaining and sturdy enough to give a long pause for thought.”—Kirkus Reviews In Fingerprints of the Gods, Hancock embarks on a worldwide quest to put together all the pieces of the vast and fascinating jigsaw of mankind’s hidden past. In ancient monuments as far apart as Egypt’s Great Sphinx, the strange Andean ruins of Tihuanaco, and Mexico’s awe-inspiring Temples of the Sun and Moon, he reveals not only the clear fingerprints of an as-yet-unidentified civilization of remote antiquity, but also startling evidence of its vast sophistication, technological advancement, and evolved scientific knowledge. A record-breaking number one bestseller in Britain, Fingerprints of the Gods contains the makings of an intellectual revolution, a dramatic and irreversible change in the way that we understand our past—and so our future. And Fingerprints of God tells us something more. As we recover the truth about prehistory, and discover the real meaning of ancient myths and monuments, it becomes apparent that a warning has been handed down to us, a warning of terrible cataclysm that afflicts the Earth in great cycles at irregular intervals of time—a cataclysm that may be about to recur. “Readers will hugely enjoy their quest in these pages of inspired storytelling.”—The Times (UK)

Download or read book Plundered Empire written by Michael Greenhalgh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the sometimes Greek but largely Roman survivals many travellers set out to see and perhaps possess throughout the immense Ottoman Empire, on what were eastward and southward extensions of the Grand Tour. Europeans were curious about the Empire, Christianity’s great rival for centuries, and plenty of information on its antiquities was available, offered here via lengthy quotations. Most accounts of the history of collecting and museums concentrate on the European end. Plundered Empire details how and where antiquities were sought, uncovered, bartered, paid for or stolen, and any tribulations in getting them home. The book provides evidence for the continuing debate about the ethics of museum collections, with 19th century international competition the spur to spectacular acquisitions.

Download or read book Excavating Modernity written by Joshua Arthurs and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural and material legacies of the Roman Republic and Empire in evidence throughout Rome have made it the "Eternal City." Too often, however, this patrimony has caused Rome to be seen as static and antique, insulated from the transformations of the modern world. In Excavating Modernity, Joshua Arthurs dramatically revises this perception, arguing that as both place and idea, Rome was strongly shaped by a radical vision of modernity imposed by Mussolini's regime between the two world wars. Italian Fascism's appropriation of the Roman past-the idea of Rome, or romanità- encapsulated the Fascist virtues of discipline, hierarchy, and order; the Fascist "new man" was modeled on the Roman legionary, the epitome of the virile citizen-soldier. This vision of modernity also transcended Italy's borders, with the Roman Empire providing a foundation for Fascism's own vision of Mediterranean domination and a European New Order. At the same time, romanità also served as a vocabulary of anxiety about modernity. Fears of population decline, racial degeneration and revolution were mapped onto the barbarian invasions and the fall of Rome. Offering a critical assessment of romanità and its effects, Arthurs explores the ways in which academics, officials, and ideologues approached Rome not as a site of distant glories but as a blueprint for contemporary life, a source of dynamic values to shape the present and future.

Download or read book Before the Pharaohs written by Edward F. Malkowski and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents conclusive evidence that ancient Egypt was originally the remnant of an earlier, highly sophisticated civilization • Supports earlier speculations based on myth and esoteric sources with scientific proof from the fields of genetics, engineering, and geology • Provides further proof of the connection between the Mayans and ancient Egyptians • Links the mystery of Cro-Magnon man to the rise and fall of this ancient civilization In the late nineteenth century, French explorer Augustus Le Plongeon, after years of research in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, concluded that the Mayan and Egyptian civilizations were related--as remnants of a once greater and highly sophisticated culture. The discoveries of modern researchers over the last two decades now support this once derided speculation with evidence revealing that the Sphinx is thousands of years older than Egyptologists have claimed, that the pyramids were not tombs but geomechanical power plants, and that the megaliths of the Nabta Playa reveal complex astronomical star maps that existed 4,000 years before conventional historians deemed such knowledge possible. Much of the past support for prehistoric civilization has relied on esoteric traditions and mythic narrative. Using hard scientific evidence from the fields of archaeology, genetics, engineering, and geology, as well as sacred and religious texts, Malkowski shows that these mythic narratives are based on actual events and that a highly sophisticated civilization did once exist prior to those of Egypt and Sumer. Tying its cataclysmic fall to the mysterious disappearance of Cro-Magnon culture, Before the Pharaohs offers a compelling new view of humanity’s past.

Mainstream science, however, has supppressed these facts. Prejudices based on current scientific theory act as a knowledge filter, giving us a picture of prehistory that is largely incorrect.
