Book History of the Australian Vegetation

Download or read book History of the Australian Vegetation written by Robert S. Hill and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and most recently human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events that led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetational types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the complementary macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa. This book will interest graduate students and researchers interested in the evolution of the flora of this fascinating continent.

Book The Geology of Australia

  • Author : David Johnson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-11-04
  • ISBN : 1107393728
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book The Geology of Australia written by David Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geology of Australia provides a vivid and informative account of the evolution of the Australian continent over the last 4400 million years. Starting with the Precambrian rocks that hold clues to the origins of life and the development of an oxygenated atmosphere, it goes on to cover the warm seas, volcanism and episodes of mountain building, which formed the eastern third of the Australian continent. This illuminating history details the breakup of the supercontinents Rodinia and Gondwana, the times of previous glaciations, the development of climates and landscapes in modern Australia, and the creation of the continental shelves and coastlines. Separate chapters cover the origin of the Great Barrier Reef, the basalts in Eastern Australia, and the geology of the Solar System. This second edition features two new chapters, covering the evolution of life on Earth while emphasising the fossil record in Australia, and providing a geological perspective on climate change. From Uluru to the Great Dividing Range, from earthquakes to dinosaurs, from sapphires to the stars The Geology of Australia is a comprehensive exploration of the timeless forces that have shaped this continent.

Book An Australian Phanerozoic Timescale

Download or read book An Australian Phanerozoic Timescale written by Gavin C. Young and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a new global perspective on the Phanerozoic timescale, by bringing together extensive Australian and overseas research on biostratigraphy, geochronology, and magnetostratigraphy. For the first time, correlations are established between Australian and European biozonal schemes for the entire Phanerozoic, by integrating local and international biozones, isotopic ages, and magnetic polarity intervals. Tie points are based on tightly constrained isotopic and biostrastigraphic ages, and this is the first compilation for the whole of the Phanerozoic to apply results from the latest isotopic dating techniques, including the high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and variants of the (superscript 40)Ar/(superscript 39)Ar method. These have radically rescaled some parts of the geological column. An Australian Phanerozoic Timescale gives the essential framework for resource exploration, geologic modelling, and reconstruction of past environments and land-sea configurations during the last 545 million years of earth history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Australian geology spans a time period from the Early Precambrian through the Quaternary Period. The Gawler Craton formed more than three billion years ago during felsic magmatism processes causing the movement of silicate minerals and magma. This process continued up until half a billion years ago. The Gawler Craton is resource rich including sources for jade, diamonds, copper, gold, zinc, cobalt, and nickel. Sometime around the breakup of Rodinia 700 million years ago, the Adelaide Rift Complex formed. Land deformation and salt tectonics influenced development of the rift. The Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges basement rocks formed during this time. The Musgrave, Coompana, and Madura Provinces formed at the same time. During Paleozoic time, the Tasman Fold Belt, Adelaide Geosyncline, and Delamerian Fold Belt formed. Basins developed early basement rocks which continued throughout Phanerozoic time. Early Paleozoic basins in the eastern region formed the Stansbury, Arrowie, and Warburton basins. Devonian time witnessed the Officer, Amadeus basins along with the Boorthana Trough Darwin Basin development. Delamerian tectonics occurred between Early and Middle Paleozoic time. Late Paleozoic time witnessed the Troubridge basin development, Pedrika Basin economic geology development, and possible igneous intrusives. The Mesozoic Period witnessed Jurassic-Cretaceous rifting associated with the separation of Australia from Antarctica with placement of kimberlitic intrusives. Tertiary time was a time of drying out and deep weathering with the formation of ferricrete, silcrete, and calcrete paleosols. Chapter 1 provides and overview of South Australian geology. Chapter 2 present the sedimentary framework of Phanerozoic basins. Chapter 3 presents post-Delamerian compressive deformation of the Amadeus, Musgrave, Officer, and Warburton basins. Chapter 4 presents Late Paleozoic events. Chapter 5 introduces Mesozoic era rifting basin development. Chapter 6 introduces Tertiary economic geology. Chapter 7 continues with Tertiary deep weathering and formation of ferricrete and silcrete paleosols. Chapter 8 discusses geologic history as ist relates to paleoclimate. Chapter 9 discusses Quaternary geology. Chapter 10 continues paleosol discussions with soil types, paloesols, and calacrete development. Chapter 11 summarizes economic geology of the region. Chapter 12 presents a summary of alluvial gold prospectives.
