Download or read book History of Australia Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by George William Rusden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 3 Who cannot read and write. Practically those who cannot write can read to little purpose, and my assumption is in the main a just one. The difference in education of immigrants from England and Scotland being only 016 per cent. In favour of England I shall dismiss it but the condition of the Irish immigrants cannot be so considered. Ireland has furnished two-thirds more immigrants than she should, and of those she has furnished, two-thirds cannot read and write. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 1 of 3 In marshalling the facts which prove how much error has been accepted as truth with regard to the pilgrim fathers of Australia, I have allowed the actors to speak for themselves as much as possible. An author may labour to incorporate as the coinage of his own brain the wit or sense which emanated from those of whom he writes but success in such effort would be, after all, ignoble, and would rob his page of the dramatic element which makes it lifelike. The day will come when men will be glad to know how the colonizers of Australia lived and moved; what were their daily tasks and distractions; how and by whom troubles were created or overcome by what passions men were stirred from time to time how sometimes the blasts of tyranny were resisted by the growing plant, and how were engendered within it parasites which preyed upon its powers and threatened to bring low many a noble bough fitted to adorn it in season, and to render back the healthy sap which, coursing from root to branch, gives health and life to the tree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 2 of 3 Governor Darling arrived in New South Wales in December 1825, after touching at Hobart Town and conveying the instructions of the Colonial Office as to the separation of the island government from that of New South Wales. He was a military man and much influenced by military ideas. A presentiment that he would be so influenced seems to have been instinctive with the leaders of the popular party, - the emancipists and self-styled patriots'. Brisbane had warmed their sympathies by cordiality on his departure, and they were in no humour to welcome his supplanter. The incoming Governor was received like the outgoing king: "As in a theatre the eyes of men Are idly bent on him that enters next... E'en so, or with much more contempt, men's eyes Did scowl on Richard. No man cried, 'God save him!'" Darling bore with him a Royal warrant appointing his Legislative Council, consisting of the chief military officer (Stewart, who had in that capacity administered the affairs of the colony in the brief interval between the departure of Brisbane and the arrival of Darling); the Chief Justice; Archdeacon Scott; the Colonial Secretary, Mr. Alexander Macleay (who arrived in January 1826, and was to succeed Major Goulbum); John Macarthur; Robert Campbell; and Charles Throsby. The Executive Council was to consist of the same persons, with the exception of the three last-named colonists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 3 It was finely remarked by Carlyle that the history of the world is the biography of its great men. So the early history of the Australian colonies has been most clearly told by narrating the deeds or quoting the words of the Governors who were on the spot, irresponsible; or of those few men who, like John Macarthur in resisting Bligh, or Wentworth in denouncing tyranny whether of one man or of many, made themselves the observed of all observers. The time approaches when individuals will cease to rule. No mountain height will dominate the landscape. Primitive upheavals are not rivalled in later epochs. Successions of undulations displace the more picturesque features of the past. One becomes very like another, and from the monotony of repetition the annalist must take refuge in summing up the general effects, gradually produced not so much by the energy of any one man, as by the resultant of forces many of them mean and some uninteresting except as errors to be avoided, and as proofs that even in the days of unlicensed printing the experience of one country cannot save mankind from re-enacting follies which have become elsewhere the scorn of the wise. Wentworth forms a partial exception; and, as one of the firstborn of Anglo-Saxon race on Australian soil, deserves special notice. But his power waned as the electoral suffrage was lowered. In the halls of counsel he might be unanswerable. At the polling-booth he might be ostracised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Labour and Industry in Australia Vol 3 of 4 written by T. A. Coghlan and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour and Industry in Australia, Vol. 3 of 4: From the First Settlement in 1788to the Establishment of the Commonwealth in 1901 When the census was taken in 1861 it was found that the population of the continent was 1,150,000, of whom more than one-fifth were located in Melbourne and Sydney. The external trade was valued at about 35,000,000, the imports being 17,600,000 and the exports 17,400,000. Gold was still the largest item of export, the value of coin and bullion sent away in 1861 being considerably more than half the total export; the balance comprised chiefly wool and other pastoral produce. The production of gold began to decline after 1856, and grew less every year during the whole period, in spite of some important discoveries made in Queensland and in New South Wales. Gold-mining still maintained a position of importance in Victoria, but even there, at the middle of the period, the industry, measured by the value of its production, ranked below either agriculture or grazing. The value of gold won in all the colonies during 1861 was about 9,676,000; in 1872 it was 7,389,000; thenceforward there was a rapid decline. Copper and coal were the only other minerals raised in commercial quantities at the beginning of this period. South Australia had been very much helped by its copper industry in the days preceding the gold discoveries; but the immediate effect of those discoveries was, as we have seen, to deprive the Province of its able-bodied workers, especially its miners.
