Book Our Gold Mine

Download or read book Our Gold Mine written by Ada C. Chaplin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Gold-Mine: The Story of American Baptist Missions in India I have written this book for you not for those who have lived through, and helped make, the history it records, for they do not need it; not for those who feel no interest in the work it describes, for they will not read it; but for you, all of whom, I think, feel some interest in the great conflict waging between the kingdoms of good and evil for the possession of our world. If it shall make more real to any one of you that part of the battle-ground which lies beyond our imme ate vision, if it shall awaken in any heart a thought of earnest sympathy for our brethren of other races, if it shall make any faltering step steady and true for the Master, I shall not regret having written it. Book History of American Baptist Missions

Download or read book History of American Baptist Missions written by William Gammell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Baptist Missions: In Asia, Africa, Europe and North America The following work was undertaken at the request of the Executive Committee of the American Baptist Missionary Union, and is designed to narrate the origin and progress of the several missions which have been commenced and sustained by the agency of that association. It is intended to be a history of the missions rather than of the society by which they are conducted, - of the colonies which have been planted on distant shores, rather than of the government by whose agency they were commenced, and by whose patronage they are sustained. On this account it records only such domestic changes and events in our missionary organization as have shaped the character or affected the progress of the enterprise for which that organization was called into being. The subject relates to many different countries and races of mankind, and comprises the personal adventures and philanthropic labors of a large number of individuals, who, in the spirit of their Master and in obedience to His great command, have toiled for the extension of Christian truth among their fellow-men. From a range of topics so wide and varied, the author has aimed to select the incidents and scenes which may fairly represent the growth of each separate mission, and to form from them a series of narratives fitted to interest the general reader. In the execution of the design, the most difficult task has been to blend particular facts with general views, and from the scattered labors of many individuals to trace the gradual advancement of the enterprise in which they are engaged. Book Encounter and Interventions

Download or read book Encounter and Interventions written by Sajal Nag and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of colonialism and its associated developments has been characterized as one of the most defining moments in the history of South Asia. The arrival of Christian missionaries has not only been coeval to colonial rule, but also associated with development in the region. Their encounter, critique, endeavour and intervention have been very critical in shaping South Asian society and culture, even where they did not succeed in converting people. Yet, there is precious little space spared for studying the role and impact of missionary enterprises than the space allotted to colonialism. Isolated individual efforts have focused on Bengal, Madras, Punjab and much remains to be addressed in the context of the unique region of the North East India. In North East India, for example, by the time the British left, a majority of the tribals had abandoned their own faith and adopted Christianity. It was a socio-cultural revolution. Yet, this aspect has remained outside the scope of history books. Whatever reading material is available is pro-Christian, mainly because they are either sponsored by the church authorities or written by ecclesiastical scholars. Very little secular research was conducted for the hundred years of missionary endeavour in the region. The interpretations, which have emerged out of the little material available, are largely simplistic and devoid of nuances. This book is an effort to decenter such explanations by providing an informed historical and cultural appreciation of the role and contribution of missionary endeavors in British India.
