Download or read book Palmer Mills written by Roger Holden and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palmer Mills were cotton spinning mills in Stockport, Cheshire. Originally built in around 1822 by James Marshall they were extended considerably over the following three decades. They ceased operating in the early 1880s, by which time they were old and obsolete. A new company purchased the mills and largely demolished them before building a new mill, which was completed in 1887. A second mill was completed in 1890. With the decline in the cotton industry, the mills closed in 1931. The No.1 Mill was demolished in 1937 but the No.2 Mill continued in various uses until it was demolished in 1999. This well illustrated book is a history and technical description of the mills in the context of the Lancashire cotton industry.

Book Workhouses of Wales and the Welsh Borders

Download or read book Workhouses of Wales and the Welsh Borders written by Peter Higginbotham and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey in 1776 recorded almost 2,000 parish workhouses operating in England, while the number in Wales was just nineteen. The New Poor Law of 1834 proved equally unattractive in much of Wales – some parts of the country resisted providing a workhouse until the 1870s, with Rhayader in Radnorshire being the last area in the whole of England and Wales to do so. Our image of these institutions has often been coloured by the work of authors such as Charles Dickens, but what was the reality? Where exactly were these workhouses located – and what happened to them? People are often surprised to discover that a familiar building was once a workhouse. Revealing locations steeped in social history, Workhouses of Wales and the Welsh Borders is a comprehensive and copiously illustrated guide to the workhouses that were set up across Wales and the border counties of Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. It provides an insight into the contemporary attitudes towards such institutions as well as their construction and administration, what life was like for the inmates, and where to find their records today.

Book Victorian Chester

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roger Swift
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780853236610
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Victorian Chester written by Roger Swift and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Victorian period marked a significant phase in the development of the ancient cathedral city of Chester, references to Victorian Chester have been notable for their absence from recent scholarship. Based on extensive local research, this volume of essays breaks new ground by examining some important aspects of the social history of Chester between 1830 and 1900. By combining detailed case studies of specific themes with wider discussion, these essays explore the ways in which Cestrian society reacted to the changing circumstances of the Victorian period and analyse local perceptions of, and responses to, a range of contemporary social problems. As such, this original study not only illuminates the social and cultural history of the period, but also illustrates both the complexity and diversity of Victorian cities. It includes the most comprehensive bibliography of Victorian Chester to date.

Book Tradition and Innovation in English Retailing 1700 to 1850

Download or read book Tradition and Innovation in English Retailing 1700 to 1850 written by Ian Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades of research into retailing in England from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries has established a seemingly clear narrative: fixed shops were widespread from an early date; 'modern' methods of retailing were common from at least the early eighteenth century; shopping was a skilled activity throughout the period; and consumers were increasingly part of - and aware of being part of - a polite and fashionable culture. All of this is true, but is it the only narrative? Research has shown that markets were still important well into the nineteenth century and small scale producer-retailers co-existed with modern warehouses. Many shops were not smart. The development of modern retailing therefore was a fractured and fragmented process. This book presents a reassessment of the standard view by challenging the usefulness of concepts like 'traditional' and 'modern', examining consumption and retailing as inextricably linked aspects of a single process, and by using the idea of narrative to discuss the roles and perceptions of the various actors in this process - such as retailers, shoppers/consumers, local authorities and commentators. The book is therefore structured around some of these competing narratives in order to provide a richer and more varied picture of consumption and retailing in provincial England.
