Book excerpt: The top non-fiction bestseller of fall 2000 was the authoritative and beautiful Canada: A People’s History, Volume One. For fall 2001, M&S is proud to present the equally stunning and comprehensive second volume of this landmark work. This fall, on consecutive Sunday evenings starting on September 30, the CBC will broadcast eight new episodes from its spectacular – and spectacularly successful – series Canada: A People’s History. Volume Two opens with the rebellion over property and language rights for the French-speaking Métis in Manitoba, led by the charismatic and troubled Louis Riel – a key event in our history and one that haunts us to this day. It closes with the less bloody but no less traumatic confrontation between the Mohawk and the army at Oka, Quebec, in 1990. Between these two harrowing events lie more than a hundred years of astonishing change and development in Canada. In those years Canadians have fought in two world wars, struggled through long, savage Depression years, adjusted to the post-war world, and peaceably accommodated themselves to wave after wave of immigrants arriving from around the globe. The political changes have been no less striking, with the eruption of nationalism in Quebec, women’s long fight for equal rights, and the creation of Canadians’ most cherished social service: universal health care. Even more than was possible in Volume One, this well-researched book tells the major events of the twentieth century as a story of people: the famous and occasionally flamboyant politicians and public figures are here, but the book’s strength lies in the stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. The tremendous popularity and the impeccable historical accuracy of both the first year of the television series and the first volume of the book, surprised and delighted historians and reviewers alike. The second year of the series and the second volume of the book are both now poised to rocket to even greater success in 2001.

Book A History of Law in Canada Volume One

Download or read book A History of Law in Canada Volume One written by Philip Girard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Law in Canada is an important three-volume project. Volume One begins at a time just prior to European contact and continues to the 1860s, Volume Two covers the half century after Confederation, and Volume Three covers the period from the beginning of the First World War to 1982, with a postscript taking the account to approximately 2000. The history of law includes substantive law, legal institutions, legal actors, and legal culture. The authors assume that since 1500 there have been three legal systems in Canada – the Indigenous, the French, and the English. At all times, these systems have co-existed and interacted, with the relative power and influence of each being more or less dominant in different periods. The history of law cannot be treated in isolation, and this book examines law as a dynamic process, shaped by and affecting other histories over the long term. The law guided and was guided by economic developments, was influenced and moulded by the nature and trajectory of political ideas and institutions, and variously exacerbated or mediated intercultural exchange and conflict. These themes are apparent in this examination, and through most areas of law including land settlement and tenure, and family, commercial, constitutional, and criminal law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Canada, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Time of Its Discovery Till the Union Year (1840-1) As regards the text, the tenor of the author's narrative has been scrupulously observed, although, in a number of places, some of his sentences have been abridged, in order to bring the volumes within a reasonable compass, no less than to make room for illustra tive matter; which latter is, for the most part, appended in supplementary foot notes, or in additions to the author's own notes. In both these cases, an initial B. Superadded, plainly shows the amount of material for which the translating editor alone is responsible. Book Rise to Greatness Volume 1 Colony 1000 1867

Download or read book Rise to Greatness Volume 1 Colony 1000 1867 written by Conrad Black and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masterful, ambitious, and groundbreaking, this is a major new history of our country by one of our most respected thinkers and historians--a book every Canadian should own. From the acclaimed biographer and historian Conrad Black comes the definitive history of Canada--a revealing, groundbreaking account of the people and events that shaped a nation. The first of three volumes, spanning from the year 1000 to 1867, and beginning with Canada's first inhabitants and the early explorers, this masterful history challenges our perception of our history and Canada's role in the world, taking on sweeping themes and vividly recounting the story of Canada's development from colony to dominion to country. Black persuasively reveals that while many would argue that Canada was perhaps never predestined for greatness, the opposite is in fact true: the emergence of a magnificent country, against all odds, was a remarkable achievement. Brilliantly conceived, this major new reexamination of our country's history is a riveting tour de force by one of the best writers writing today.

Experience ripened by the progress of time and a close and constant observation of public affairs and public men, the author has applied himself to the task of giving the people of Canada a history of their country, The reader Will bear in mind that the author is only speaking of a general History of Canada. Many excellent works exist on detached portions of Canadian History. Garneau' 5 History of Lower Canada, up to the Union in 1840, although written from a French Canadian stand point, and very inac curate and misleading at times, is an excellent work on the Whole Parkman' s admirable series, based almost exclusively on records from the archives of France, or on the authority of French writers, completely exhaust all the more dramatic and romantic episodes of the Canada of the Old Regime, and clearly prove how frequently wrong and partial Garneau is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Country, Vol. 1 of 6: A History of Canada for Four Hundred Years Through the shaded aisles of primeval forests, over thousands of miles of lake and river and wilderness, echoed the sounds of that hundred years of war between French and English for the possession of a Continent. Out of these struggles developed the striking incidents of the Revolutionary period and the first conflict for Canadian independence of the United States; out of these new conditions came the memories of a Canadian war in r8r2 which was fought for freedom as fully, and marked by episodes as heroic, as were the conflicts of ancient Greek or Spartan, modern Pole or Belgian, the men of Scotland or Ireland or England.
