Book Pioneer Biography Vol 2

Download or read book Pioneer Biography Vol 2 written by James McBride and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Biography, Vol. 2: Sketches of the Lives of Some of the Early Settlers of Butler County, Ohio In issuing the concluding volume of these Biographical Sketches, we have little to add to what we prefaced to the first volume. A number of the sketches are of comparatively little importance, historically, containing as they do not much else than private family details; and, while an apology may be due for admitting them into a Historical Series, yet, they have a certain value as records of some of the oldest pioneer families, which may sufficiently justify their publication. We are not without hope, too, that some Genealogical Society in this Ohio Valley may yet be grateful to us for preserving what we have been tempted to reject. So, trusting in this hope, and not on present appreciation, we give all the sketches which Mr. McBride selected for publication, even though some of them are only of local and personal interest. In one case only - the sketch of Captain John Cleves Symmes - have we deemed it proper to omit any considerable portion of Mr. McBride's manuscript. He was a firm believer in the "Theory of Concentric Spheres," and most of his sketch was taken up with an argument in its defense. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of a key and complex American religious figure of the nineteenth century, considered by many to be the "father of Shaker literature." Richard McNemar (1770-1839) led a remarkable life, replete with twists and turns that influenced American religions in many ways during the early nineteenth century. Beginning as a Presbyterian minister in the Midwest, he took his preaching and the practice of his congregation in a radically different, evangelical "free will" direction during the Kentucky Revival. A cornerstone of his New Light church in Ohio was spontaneous physical movement and exhortations. After Shaker missionaries arrived, McNemar converted and soon played a prominent role in expanding and raising public awareness of their religion by founding Shaker communities in the Midwest, becoming the first Shaker published author and the most prolific composer of Shaker hymns. Split between two opposing religious traditions--an evangelical movement attracting tens of thousands and Shakerism, which drew only hundreds to its villages--Richard McNemar's life poses a challenge for any biographer. Christian Goodwillie's mastery of the archival records surrounding McNemar and the Shakers allows him to tell McNemar's story in a way that fully captures the complexity of the man and the scope of his enduring legacy in American religious history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than twenty years, John Milton Bernhisel negotiated with the federal government on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bruce W. Worthen illuminates the life and work of the man whose diplomacy steered the Church’s relationship with Washington, D.C. from its early period of dangerous conflict to a peaceful and pragmatic coexistence. Having risen from a Pennsylvania backcountry upbringing to become a respected member of the upper class, Bernhisel possessed a personal history that allowed him to reach common ground with politicians and other outsiders. He negotiated for Joseph Smith’s life and, after the Church’s relocation to the Utah Territory, took on the task of rehabilitating the public image of the Latter-day Saints. Brigham Young’s defiance of the government undermined Bernhisel’s work, but their close if sometimes turbulent relationship ultimately allowed Bernhisel to make peace with Washington, secure a presidential pardon for Young, and put Utah and the Latter-day Saints on the road to formally joining the United States.
