Book excerpt: Cameroon has a lot to offer on tourism, and the country has comparatively good infrastructure, making getting around easier than it is in much of West and Central Africa. The country is also considered comparatively safe for travellers, but the serious unrest in neighbouring Nigeria has led travel authorities to advise against travel to the extreme north of Cameroon and areas along the Nigerian border. Unfortunately, many of Cameroon's best tourist attractions are in the north, including the Waza National Park, with its wealth of wildlife, and the scenic splendour of the Mandara Mountains, a great favourite with hikers. Tourists intent on exploring the north of Cameroon will therefore have to take every possible safety precaution. This eBook titled: "Tourism Industry in Cameroon" is provided for your Guide and information when touring Cameroon, you don't need to get lost or frustrated during your tour in any way, and you will have the knowledge of the environment and the places you intend to visit ahead of your visit. Book excerpt: Cameroon is a country in central Africa that is bordered by Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, Equatorial Guinea to the south, and Gabon to the southwest. It has a diverse geography, including coastal plains, rainforests, savannas, and the volcanic peaks of Mount Cameroon in the west. Cameroon is home to over 250 different ethnic groups, each with its own language and cultural traditions. French and English are both official languages in the country, reflecting its colonial history as a protectorate of Germany, then a League of Nations mandate administered by France and Britain before it gained independence in 1960. Cameroon is one of the most developed countries in the region, with a relatively stable political system and a growing economy based on natural resources such as oil, cocoa, and timber. However, it faces many social and economic challenges, including high levels of poverty, inequality, and corruption. Despite this, Cameroon has a vibrant arts and music scene, and has produced famous cultural figures such as author Mongo Beti and musician Manu Dibango. Its national football team, known as the Indomitable Lions, has also achieved international success, winning the Africa Cup of Nations five times.

Book Swedish Ventures in Cameroon 1883 1923

Download or read book Swedish Ventures in Cameroon 1883 1923 written by Shirley Ardener and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1880s were a critical time in Cameroon. A German warship arrived in the Douala estuary and proclaimed Cameroon a protectorate. At that time, two Swedes, Knutson and Waldau, were living on the upper slopes of the Cameroon Mountain. Very little is known about their activities. One, Knutson, wrote a long memoir of his time in Cameroon (1883-1895) which is published here for the first time. It gives fascinating insights into everyday life in Cameroon and into the multifaceted relationships among the various Europeans, and between them and the Africans, at the end of the 19th century; we learn about the Swedes' quarrels first with the Germans and later with the British, over land purchases, thus revealing the origins of long on-going disputes over Bakweri lands. We are given vivid descriptions of Bakweri notables and their, and the Europeans', cultural practices, a rare eye-witness account of the sasswood witchcraft ordeal, and learn about Knutson's friendships with slaves. Together with appended contemporary correspondence, legal opinions, and early (translated) texts, this memoir must be considered as a unique and invaluable primary source for the pre-colonial history of Cameroon.
