Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INVESTIGATING FOSSILS INVESTIGATING FOSSILS A HISTORY OF PALAEONTOLOGY Investigating Fossils – A History of Palaeontology is a concise and accessible look at changing attitudes to palaeontology in general, and fossils in particular. From the existential and philosophical debates arising from fossils – such as their implications for the age of the Earth – to their role as markers in Darwin’s theory of evolution, fossils have been the centre of highly charged debate for over two centuries. This book, which is aimed at anyone with an interest in the history and philosophy of science, not only describes the process of fossil formation and the history of the discovery of fossils. It goes further, and highlights the continuing importance of fossils to our ever-developing understanding of where the planet and its myriad species have come from. Painting a vivid, lively portrait of the history and development of palaeontology, Investigating Fossils is a fascinating and informative tour of the recent history – and possible future – of the science of fossils.

Book Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research

Download or read book Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research written by Linda G. Ackerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of published literature can be overwhelming for scientists and researchers moving from a broad disciplinary research area to a more specialized one, particularly in fields that use information from more than one discipline. Without a focused inquiry, the researcher may find too little information or may be overcome by too much. Striking the correct balance of information is the focus of Literature Search Strategies for Interdisciplinary Research. This useful reference tool studies diverse interdisciplinary areas revealing the general and individual qualities that dictate the strategies of successful searches. Beginning with a bare-bones search strategy for finding primary research in interdisciplinary areas, the book then goes on to provide hints for research in specific disciplines, as the unique traits of the individual fields compound the difficulties in interdisciplinary research. Individual chapters, written by experts in that particular area, address ten research fields in depth, disclosing the common qualities of interdisciplinary research. The study areas covered include Paleontology, Crystallography, Quaternary Research, Human Factors Engineering, Nanotechnology, Atmospheric Chemistry, Bioethics, Computational Biology, Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Machine Learning. For scientists and engineers new to their fields, as well as librarians whose responsibilities include collecting library materials for newly-emerging interdisciplinary research areas, Linda Ackerson's guide provides all that is needed to develop a successful search strategy.

Book The Stolen History of Palaeontology

Download or read book The Stolen History of Palaeontology written by Michael Maisch and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, our civilization underwent a 'Great Reset' that affected all areas of life, the sciences being no exception. One of the 'new sciences' that became the focus of particular public interest was vertebrate palaeontology. A scientific mythology was created around a few heroic figures such as the Frenchman Georges Cuvier and the Englishwoman Mary Anning, which persists to this day in textbooks, academic teaching and public perception, but has little or nothing to do with the real story. This book attempts to demystify these larger-than-life creatures, and to set the record straight about how the official history of palaeontology has become skewed. Who described the Megatherium? Did dinosaur research really start in the nineteenth century? Who found the first ichthyosaur? When was the method of comparative palaeontological anatomy developed? Who solved the mystery of the 'fossil man' of Öhningen? Was there no palaeontological research outside Europe and North America before the nineteenth century? Who first discovered that there were extinct species? These and many other questions are explored here, with some surprising answers. Important finds, indeed entire collections, manuscripts, records and even scientific publications from the time before Cuvier have been lost or completely ignored to this day. Some of these are brought to light here and their true significance for the history of science, and the emergence of our modern world, is re-evaluated. An expedition into the 'deep time' of a science that is far older than the official interpretation would have us believe.
