Book Regarding Manneken Pis

Download or read book Regarding Manneken Pis written by Catherine Emerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manneken Pis, a fountain featuring a bronze child urinating, has stood on the same Brussels street corner since at least the mid-fifteenth century. Since there is no consensus on its meaning, it has been used to express many different readings of social relations in a complex city and nation state. It has formed part of the festival culture of the city - from royal entries to gay pride - but has also been exploited in conflicts arising out of war and occupation, and the tensions inherent in modern Belgium. Drawing on archives, histories, police reports, devotional literature, ephemera and a wealth of other sources, Catherine Emerson examines how one smaller-than-lifesized water source has come to embody a certain sort of Brussels identity.

Book French Civilization and Its Discontents

Download or read book French Civilization and Its Discontents written by Tyler Edward Stovall and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when the study of French is no longer coterminous with the study of France? French Civilization and Its Discontents explores the ways in which considerations of difference, especially colonialism, postcolonialism, and race, have shaped French culture and French studies in the modern era. Rejecting traditional assimilationist notions of French national identity, contributors to this groundbreaking volume demonstrate how literature, history, and other aspects of what is considered French civilization have been shaped by global processes of creolization and differentiation. This book ably demonstrates the necessity of studying France and the Francophone world together, and of recognizing not only the presence of France in the Francophone world but also the central place occupied by the Francophone world in world literature and history.

These are tales that echo through the corridors of history, myths that dance on the edges of imagination, and legends that defy the grasp of time itself. As we embark on this journey through the realms of legendary stories, we find ourselves at the crossroads of myth and reality, where the extraordinary meets the ordinary. This collection is a celebration of the human spirit's boundless capacity for storytelling, an exploration of the narratives that have been passed down through generations. Here, the pages breathe with the whispers of heroes, gods, and mythical creatures, inviting readers to lose themselves in the enchanting landscapes of folklore and fable. From the ancient epics that have shaped civilizations to the folklore that colors the tapestry of diverse cultures, each story is a testament to the universal power of narrative. These legends are not merely tales of the past; they are living entities that continue to shape our understanding of the world and ourselves. As we delve into the rich tapestry of these legendary stories, let us remember that, in the realm of myths, truth often wears the cloak of metaphor, and the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. It is in these blurred lines that the essence of human experience finds its expression. May this collection be a vessel that carries you across oceans of time, introducing you to characters whose names have become synonymous with courage, wisdom, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Through the corridors of these tales, may you find moments of reflection, inspiration, and perhaps, a touch of the extraordinary within the ordinary. So, dear reader, embark with us on this odyssey into the heart of legendary narratives, where the echoes of the past reverberate in the present, and the ageless stories continue to cast their spell on the human soul. Bon voyage into the realms of legend.

Book excerpt: ‘Legend of Blockhead and His Nessie’ is an incredibly (!) well-documented story about one Richard Blockhead and about his feat at the Fatherland and Freedom monument in Riga, Latvia. This is a story of a man who courageously challenged the dogma of modern society, of his unbelievable cultural and historical discoveries that were made in his ancestral mansion near Loch Ness in Scotland. The reader will also find out the alternative story of the Universe’s origin; how Lucifer became God’s rival and how, for that, he was turned into a snake-like monster, Nessie. The monster was kicked out of Heaven, and Richie was exiled from the paradise of civilised humanity on Earth. The two outcasts, one from Heaven, another from earth, became friends for neither wanted to live within the constraints of laws. They longed for their infinite freedom, even though it meant sacrificing their comfort. This book is addressed not only to those who love fantasy and adventure genres, but also to the readers with philosophical mindsets who are interested in personal and creative psychology.

Book Relentless Progress

Download or read book Relentless Progress written by Jack Zipes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can fairy tales subvert consumerism? Can fantasy and children's literature counter the homogenizing influence of globalization? Can storytellers retain their authenticity in the age of consumerism? These are some of the critical questions raised by Jack Zipes, the celebrated scholar of fairy tales and children's literature. In this book, Zipes argues that, despite a dangerous reconfiguration of children as consumers in the civilizing process, children's literature, fairy tales, and storytelling possess a uniquely powerful (even fantastic)capacity to resist the "relentless progress" of negative trends in culture. He also argues that these tales and stories may lose their power if they are too diluted by commercialism and merchandising. Stories have been used for centuries as a way to teach children (and adults) how to see the world, as well as their place within it. In Relentless Progress, Zipes looks at the surprising ways that stories have influenced people within contemporary culture and vice versa. Among the many topics explored here are the dumbing down of books for children, the marketing of childhood, the changing shape of feminist fairy tales, and why American and British children aren’t exposed to more non-western fairy tales. From picture books to graphic novels, from children’s films to video games, from Grimm’s fairy tales to the multimedia Harry Potter phenomenon, Zipes demonstrates that while children’s stories have changed greatly in recent years, much about these stories have remained the same—despite their contemporary, high-tech repackaging. Relentless Progress offers remarkable insight into why classic folklore and fairy tales should remain an important part of the lives of children in today’s digital culture.

Download or read book A Slice of History Musing on Religion written by Frans Koning and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a farm in The Netherlands to poverty-stricken Sierra Leone…from the brief peace after the Great War to the horrors of World War II…from Europe to America…this extraordinary book of anecdotal essays ranges through the life of a man who has lived broadly and deeply. Author Frans Koning shares his observations and impressions on topics ranging from what it was like to be a teenager in a Nazi-occupied country, to his experiences in Africa with the Peace Corps, and his move to the United States. He has experienced the effects of brutality and fear and lived to tell about man’s inhumanity to man. With a perspective gained from three continents, he can see how human experience is both diverse and similar…and how patterns in human behavior emerge, from the Waffen SS to ISIS. Immediately engaging, loosely structured, and retaining a piquant flavor of his native land in a Dutchman’s English, A Slice of History is a uniquely personal yet immediately accessible memoir of life during the most turbulent decades of our time.

Book Artists Magazines

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gwen Allen
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-08-21
  • ISBN : 026252841X
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Artists Magazines written by Gwen Allen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How artists' magazines, in all their ephemerality, materiality, and temporary intensity, challenged mainstream art criticism and the gallery system. During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Artists created works expressly for these mass-produced, hand-editioned pages, using the ephemerality and the materiality of the magazine to challenge the conventions of both artistic medium and gallery. In Artists' Magazines, Gwen Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday (the 1960s to the 1980s) and compiles a comprehensive, illustrated directory of hundreds of others. Among the magazines Allen examines are Aspen (1965–1971), a multimedia magazine in a box—issues included Super-8 films, flexi-disc records, critical writings, artists' postage stamps, and collectible chapbooks; Avalanche (1970-1976), which expressed the countercultural character of the emerging SoHo art community through its interviews and artist-designed contributions; and Real Life (1979-1994), published by Thomas Lawson and Susan Morgan as a forum for the Pictures generation. These and the other magazines Allen examines expressed their differences from mainstream media in both form and content: they cast their homemade, do-it-yourself quality against the slickness of an Artforum, and they created work that defied the formalist orthodoxy of the day. Artists' Magazines, featuring abundant color illustrations of magazine covers and content, offers an essential guide to a little-explored medium.

Book Theory and Practice in Heritage and Sustainability

Download or read book Theory and Practice in Heritage and Sustainability written by Elizabeth Auclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores cultural sustainability and its relationships to heritage from a wide interdisciplinary perspective. By examining the interactions between people and communities in the places where they live it exemplifies the diverse ways in which a people-centred heritage builds identities and supports individual and collective memories. It encourages a view of heritage as a process that contributes through cultural sustainability to human well-being and socially- and culturally-sensitive policy. With theoretically-informed case studies from leading researchers, the book addresses both concepts and practice, in a range of places and contexts including landscape, townscape, museums, industrial sites, every day heritage, ‘ordinary’ places and the local scene, and even UNESCO-designated sites. The contributors, most of whom, like the editors, were members of the COST Action ‘Investigating Cultural Sustainability’, demonstrate in a cohesive way how the cultural values that people attach to place are enmeshed with issues of memory, identity and aspiration and how they therefore stand at the centre of sustainability discourse and practice. The cases are drawn from many parts of Europe, but notably from the Baltic, and central and south-eastern Europe, regions with distinctive recent histories and cultural approaches and heritage discourses that offer less well-known but transferable insights. They all illustrate the contribution that dealing with the inheritance of the past can make to a full cultural engagement with sustainable development. The book provides an introductory framework to guide readers, and a concluding section that draws on the case studies to emphasise their transferability and specificity, and to outline the potential contribution of the examples to future research, practice and policy in cultural sustainability. This is a unique offering for postgraduate students, researchers and professionals interested in heritage management, governance and community participation and cultural sustainability.
